Re: White M3A1 Scout Car Restoration
Still looking for a diff. It was a collapsing pinion bearing which caused the trouble. I don't know if the carrier is sprung or not at this stage as I am still using the old girl.
Just completed a 694 mile trip to Corowa and return for the 33rd Annual Corowa Swim-In. Year of the 6x6. All done over Mt.Hotham (1842 metres high) in front wheel drive after removing the rear tail shaft, both rear axles and greasing the wheel bearings.
There where 2 White Scout Cars in attendance and another 161 other entries. A good week except for a bit of rain on Friday.
Any way, still looking for a front or rear diff, (the centres are interchangable).
regards Rick.

Re: White M3A1 Scout Car Restoration
Rick,
If the 'centre's are interchangable and the front is supposedly the same as a GMC JImmy 353 front axle............maybe the diff will be the same as the Jimmy's?
By the way does anyone know either the watts/amps of the 1 ohm resistor in the regulator, or where to obtain a replacemnet 1 ohm carbon resistor?
Cheers
Paul

Re: White M3A1 Scout Car Restoration
Thanks for the info on JAAP.
I have been told by a electronic's engineer by (looking at my schemantics) that all I need is a modern 10w 1ohm resistor as it is only to enegise the circuit breaker armature.
Thanks
Paul

Re: White M3A1 Scout Car Restoration
Thanks for the kind words ,but I cannot take much of the credit. The restoration was done by Robin Mawson who also has a White..I did a few smaller bits such as the steering wheel and the chasing up of as many parts - NOS and others -as possible.
Bob Gillard ,Rod Shaver and Gary Hebding were all of enormous help.
Overall we both put a huge amount of time into it. It is so much easier when a colleague has a similar vehicle.
I really enjoy driving it. It is a lot of fun and has a certain "presence". It doesn't need a transporter. The lack of synchro, lack of power steering, turning circle of the Queen Mary and poor driving vision make it a challenge but it is such a great vehicle.
I don't have to give way to much on the road.
I must confess once I backed into a Mercedes parked across the roar and punched a hole in its door as well as pushing it right in. I didn't feel a thing and only later did i notice a tiny amount of paint off the rear bumper. I do feel very safe in it.
I try to take it out about every few weeks to keep it ticking sweetly. It is kept clean and dusted down regularly. My wife thinks I'm crackers but that's the way it goes.
