GPW Engine Block
Hello Everyone,
Part needed:
1942 GPW Engine Block or later
I am in need of a 1942 Ford GPW engine block. If anyone has one that they are willing to part with please let me know.
I just had one sent in to the Machine Shop and it seems that the block is just in too bad of shape do a work over on it. So if you have a good engine block or know of someone that has a block for sale please hit me up.
Regards,
Alan

What is your GPW’s serial number?

Yes, it’s a replacement block. The serial number should be on the oval pad on the opposite side of the block (unless the pad was left blank).
Out of curiosity, what exactly is wrong with your block?

Re: GPW Engine Block
Michael,
Well, When we first got it all the pistons were seized in the cylinders, had to beat them out with a 2x4 and a sledge hammer. The machine shop had said that all 4 cylinders would need to be re-sleeved, the deck needs to be braised then re-decked, needs new valve seats. Overall it need just about everything. One of the head studs has pulled out so we had it repaired but the repaired stud did not hold. it has a lot of pitting on the deck and around the valve seats. It also has an oil pump stud broke off in it. The shop I took it to specializes in antique engines and they had stated that it would be better to find a block that was in better shape. I have attached some photos below. We have had the engine re-worked at another shop but we had some concerns regarding the pitting on the deck.

I agree with the decision to find another Block. Time to cut your losses especially with the fact that its a replacement engine. This is a money pit. The second machine shop should have told you the same thing as the first shop.

Thanks for posting some photos so we can see what you are dealing with. I agree...she seems a bit rough...don’t scrap it though. Some guys like putting together “display” engines. Is it a “blank block” or is there a serial number on the raised pad?

Re: GPW Engine Block
Looks like its 80 over? so its not resleeved. A replacement block is about as correct for your jeep as one that is one number off so no matter what it will be non matching. I would resleeve it, deck it after valve seats are in, port it to clean out the rust. Maybe shave the piston tops and get a custom copper gasket for the head to get compression correct. Hopefully it was magnafluxed, I see nothing about cracks in the water jacket or elsewhere. Nothing broken inside from beating on it? Doesnt need a centerline job, is crank cut or was it just put backin? Any damage to rods from beating on pistons? Anyway, if it will sit in the corner of your garage and become a mouse house, send me a pm with how much you want for it to get it out of your garage. I might make a table out of it or??

Re: GPW Engine Block
If I had it I would take it to Abraham’s and have them work their magic. There is no doubt in my mind that this block could be resurrected.
If you are selling this block I’d take a stab at trying to save it.

Re: GPW Engine Block
Point is....original GPW blocks don't grow on trees and while this one is in rough shape, everything it needs is probably what a good first-rate rebuild would entail:
boil out
pressure test
magnaflux
crack repairs
deck the block
new valve seats
swap out heli-coil for time-sert
sleeve back to STD
new valve guides
new valves
new pistons
rod check
turn crank
balance pistons, rods, crank, flywheel
As long as the first four items here pass muster, the rest is SOP. Most engine shops don't get it...we value original and matching number jeeps as that does add value.
