WTB: Fram Oil Filter

Post by Michael O. » Tue Jun 27, 2017 10:17 am

Looking for a nice "piss away from block" Fram Military Standard oil filter. I discovered a circa June 1943 photograph (jeep would have been just over two months old at the time) showing the engine compartment of a GPW with a registration number (20369282) that's only 37 digits higher than mine, which leads me to believe that my '43 GPW may have been equipped with a Fram filter from the factory. The Fram filter in the photograph appears to be the "piss away from block" type.

Thanks in advance.

Michael
Couple questions.
What does "piss away from block" mean? Did the photographed GPW come from the same factory as yours?
Thanks
Jay

Hello Jay...

"Piss away from block" refers to the drain plug on the bottom of the filter housing.

Yes, from my documentation, the registration number on the aforementioned GPW, which is 37 digits higher than mine, is a Louisville number. I am in the process of re-confirming this.

The photo was taken at Camp Hood, TX and the accompanying document is dated 2 JUN 43. Although the GPW was modified for a 55 amp generator to power radios, the engine compartment looks prestige....again, the jeep would probably have been less than 2 months old by the time the photo was taken. The modification probably took place in April '43 before the vehicle was sent to the Tank Destroyer Board for testing. Is there a possibility the Fram was swapped from a Purolator? Sure...but I find the photo interesting and removing the oil filter wouldn't have been necessary to install the 55 amp generator. It's one of those photos that makes one wonder.....

There is another photo of a GPW with a hood number 20 digits higher than mine but it's a side profile view only.

Thanks, there's always something out there to learn. It's neat to find those so close to yours.

Jay, seems like I learn something new every day...sometimes two or three things depending who I'm in the company of. Yes, it is interesting to see a photo of a jeep that's so close to mine (found two now) and to have a shot of the engine compartment of one is quite valuable. It shows what Louisville was possibly installing at the time. I would have never doubted that mine should have a Purolator but now maybe I'm leaning towards a Fram. Also, the one in the photo has what may be the early style bayonet type oil dipstick (What to call it...Type 2?). Now I'm convinced there were three different oil dipsticks used in GPW production. (Large friction type, bayonet type with smooth sides and flat top, and bayonet type with serrated edge and circular dimple around the top edge. As we know, the Slat Grill style dipstick and straight tube was probably not used in GPW production....but I digress).

Anyone have a piss away from block Fram?

Michael,

Just a thought, your jeep number is very close to the photographed number but do you know if both jeeps came from the same factory? I am sure Tom would know for sure.

If the photographed Jeep came from a different factory then your Purolator might still be correct for your Jeep.

Brett, 20369282 was a number assigned to Louisville. The DoD of the jeep in the photo was either on the same day or the day after mine.

I think I've got a couple. They are in varying stages of take off condition. I think all don't have any dents. I'll take some pics and post them.

The only one I found that is "piss away from block" is this one. There is no lid and I don't know the real difference between purolator and Fram other than the lids. I thought the difference was fram had indents on the bottom. Maybe you can educate me.

If this is what your looking for just PM me with what you think is fair. Shipping for this to the Midwest is somewhere in the range of $10-12.

From your photos, it looks like the indentation are more tapered. The wartime Frams I've seen have straight indentations:

Thats what I thought. I have a few Frams but the drain is on the block side on all of them.
