Wanted: Late war Stamped MB Pintal Hook

Post by jeep-a-holic » Sun Apr 30, 2017 2:42 am

Hello!
Title says it all. I need to replace my early hook with a late one. Trades are welcome or I can just buy one outright.

Let me know what you got!

For what jeep are you looking for a stamped pintle hook for?

Michael,
It's for the June 44. I just found out that in June of 44 was the switch to stamped. I don't have documents on it, just going by what a friend has researched.

Did you get my email regarding the transfer case?

My MB 356378, 31July 44 was unchanged from the date of surplus late 46 until I bought it from the only civilian owner ( Sarah Green, a legendary Maine Guide) in 1971. It had the earlier Pintle.

Ok, I just found out that the information I was going by (Lloyd Whites book) was proven wrong. I guess I will be keeping my pintal where it is!

I know he is indispensable, I'm not stating anything against him. I'm just stating where I heard that it was June of 44. I don't have his wonderful book in front of me, so I can't quote it exactly. It's one of the books that I will never get rid of as it's full of very useful material.

Sean, I would highly recommend that you NOT change out your cast pintle hook for a late stamped pintle. Your June 1944 MB would absolutely have had a cast pintle hook affixed at the factory.

Sean: Exactly where did you learn the information provided in Lloyd's book was "proven wrong"? Please specify your source. Thank you.

I respectfully disagree with Michael's blanket statement. Per his Wanted post in this subforum seeking copies of Lloyd's Volumes 3, 4 and 5, it is apparent Michael does not yet have a copy of Lloyd White's Volume 3. That Volume 3 contains 34 pages of Description of Changes on the [MB] Jeep by date prepared by D.G. "Barney" Roos, Willys-Overland Vice President in Charge of Engineering. On page 27 of that list, it is noted that effective June 12, 1944 on the production line, Willys started installing "a steel stamping type of pintle hook as optional with the present steel or forged types (to ease the casting situation and reduce costs)." "As optional" means it was not a wholesale substitution, but that the stamped pintle hook began being used on the production line along with the cast or forged pintle hooks. So either type could appear on a MB beginning June 12, 1944. Just because one MB delivered after June 12, 1944 has a cast or forged pintle hook does not mean all MB jeeps produced up to that jeep's delivery date also had only cast or forged pintle hooks.

As Mulder Fox says, "The truth is out there", in this particular instance courtesy of Bob Westerman and Lloyd White. If anyone has Willys factory documents or other reliable sources of information that refute Willys Vice President, Barney Roos, please post it here for our edification. Thank you.
Happy Jeep Trails,

Fred, not disagreeing with you. Perhaps my verbiage shouldn't have been so "blanket" as you say. I will say that if someone has an July 1944 assembled MB it is absolutely acceptable to have the cast type pintle hook attached. The use of cast pintle hooks just didn't stop on 12 June, 1944. I own two late '44 MB's....369488 and 379204....both had cast pintle hooks attached. I have no reason to doubt that they weren't originally affixed. If a guy has a July 1944 MB with a stamped pintle hook...great! It might be original. If he has a cast pintle hook affixed then why swap it for a stamped one just because others made during the same time frame may have had a stamped pintle hook?

Also, just because I'm searching for some additional copies of Lloyd's books doesn't mean that I don't own any and/or have never read them.

BTW....it's Fox Mulder....not Mulder Fox.

Were the stamped pintle hook optional alongside the cast hooks throughout production, or were there a date of definitive changeover to stamped hooks on every MB coming off the line? Does anyone know this date?
My January 24, 1945 MB 409616 has the cast hook, but I obviously can’t say if it was born with it, or a stamped hook?!
