WTB: Late MB Skid Plate (FOUND)

Post by Michael O. » Fri Feb 03, 2017 7:45 am

Looking for the second to last style late MB skid plate (A-8858) used from late Sept 1944 to approx Feb 1945 to accommodate the internal parking brake system. I have one of the very last type skid plate used on MB's from Feb 1945 to end of production to trade if need be.

Thanks in advance!

I may be able to help, but I need some help first. Is your picture showing what you want, or what you have available to trade?

As i read it he needs the one in the picture. The last one used on the MB has an extra hole that this picture does not have. The one he has to trade has an extra hole. Michael if push comes to shove all you would have to do is fill in the hole. But I am guessing that you know that.

Affirmative...the photo shows the one I need. I have a very late skid plate, which looks similar and was used from Feb'45 onwards, to trade.

Please, anybody? I don't want to use an incorrect skid plate on my MB!

Not a very large pool of them out there.

Good day Michael. My take on this skid plate is only my opinion period. I am not the purist on some parts that you are. (Not saying that being a purist is a bad thing). These two late style skid plates appear to be identical with the exception that the one that you want should not have an extra hole. If the plate that you want had a tear or gouge in the spot that the hole is you would repair the damage and use the plate i would assume. To me the extra hole in the plate that you have is a tear that was made by Willys with a punch press. I would fill the hole with the proper thickness metal grind it smooth and call it a repair. If you had a plate that did not have a hole that you needed you would drill the hole, again i assume. But that is me. Just a thought.

Plugging and welding the extra hole on my very late war skid plate is an option I've thought about...thus making it into a visually correct skid plate for my MB. I'd hate to modify an original part though and there are plenty of guys who are looking for the very late war skid plate also. I have a few months until I need to make a decision but really hope to find the correct skid plate I'm looking for.

My search continues.

FYI...Along with a very late war skid plate I also have a nice mid war two-piece MB skid plate available for trade also.

I would sell it if I can find the one I need...they are almost identical so if all fails, I could still use it. If I sell the very late one then I'll still need a skid plate! I'd be happy to trade with you if you can find the one I need.
