Carter WO Base - FOUND

Post by twinflyer17 » Mon Feb 22, 2016 4:38 am

Hi All,

Looking for a replacement throttle base for my Carter WO carb. It's a 12 patent, post war carb. The current base I have is listed I-456. I'm not worried if it's war or post war, I just need one that works well.

I rebuilt this carb over the weekend but I'm still having issues with the throttle linkage "sticking" due to way too much play in the linkage on the base. It seems that the setup where the throttle linkage and cable hookup is is shot, as the butterfly is also sticking and fully closing when letting off of the gas, causing the jeep to choke off and die when trying to drive it.

Apologies if my descriptions aren't completely accurate; I've included a few pictures (before the rebuild) to show what I'm in need of. Since my current carb is rebuilt, with the exception of the throttle linkage setup, I'm hoping to find a base in excellent, bolt-on condition. I'd also consider a full rebuilt post war WO, or war specific WO for the right price, too! :D

It's possible those issues are caused by the holes for the shaft being worn out and oval-shaped. This also means they won't be airtight anymore. If you do a search on the forum, forummember Scoutpilot posted a tutorial on how to drill out those holes and re-bush them. He also sells refurbished bases. Most original bases have this issue due to their age, so it's best to either refurbish this base or but one that has already been done I think.

Thanks, David! I was thinking that might be the issue. I've reached out to Scoutpilot to see if he has a refurbished base he's willing to part with. I also found the tutorial, but I think I'll save that as a last resort

I install bronze oilight bushings in the base. Replate the shaft and attaching parts.
$50.00 exchange.

Thanks, Louie. I've found a base for now, but if I'm in need in the future, I will let you know!
