What does a person do in order to get a top that is compatible with the fasteners? The GI Issue 7726446 Top I am using fits both types of studs perfectly Will post the studs tonite.

Hi Farrell,
The barrel grommet you are referring to is the cinch fastener receptacle. They are not installed on later tops.
What is your data source for the above statement ?

Farrell:
I have a Ford top with the gas can strap bracket cutout on the rear. That dates it according to Nabholtz as from MB-165582 or August 1942 or later. Nabholtz also notes that the change from the push-type fasteners to the capstan-type on the windshield took place at MB-164554 or July 1942.

In looking at my top which of course has the push-type fasteners on the top bow pocket flaps...I can't see ANY difference between the grommets along the front edge of the top and the grommets for the push-type fasteners on the top bow flaps. This top with the strap bracket cut-out dates it to AFTER the capstan-type fasteners were used on the windshield.

Also....if there was a difference between the grommets on the front edge of the top between the push-type and the capstan type then it would not be possible to swap the tops from one early vehicle to a late one or vice-versa.

So...I believe that the gormmets on the top flaps and the front edge remained the same even when the capstan type fittings were introduced.

Hi Ben,
It is described as EYELET, ORD# 106475, Gov't Stock #H00211740
It helps others if you post the actual correct Gov't Stock #. The correct number is H002-0211740. This helps when others are cross checking posted numbers. Also as far as the Ordnance Dept. was concerned in April '54, Stock # H002-0211740 only crossed to part number WO A-3113, ORD 106475 with no Ford part number listed.

Edited to add letter in red.

Hi Farrell,

Ford GPW documents shows the same groment being used on the top bow flaps and the across the canvas top front.

SNL G-658 is a good reference as well as the GTB Parts manual to decipher hardware information. Having actual pictures in a Gov't publication would make this all too easy. My only concern in this thread is the type grommets used. Chuck is correct on the top to bow flaps as the SNL's indicate a quantity of 16 grommets which is the total of 12 for the windshield plus the six for the two flaps.
Sorry, Farrel, if this is a bit demanding, it all contributes to a satisfactory product.

Hi Farrell,

Just clarify the point, the two photos that you posted above are not from a Ford made GPW canvas top.

Been watching tops that blow off Jeeps for decades due to the grommets. Nothing worse than stopping a jeep every couple miles to refasten a Jeep top. I have supplied thousands of OEM GI Issue studs and grommets for MV canvas over the years. It's all sold out now but the experience makes me ask questions.

There has been a problem with tops coming disconnected with the studs while the Jeep is at speed. MB GPW wartime style tops do flap quite a bit. Your grommets appear a bit large, could you measure them using a drill bit as a gauge I will measure the ones on my GI Issue top and report back.
The I.D. of the 10 grommets across the front of a GI Issue tip are 5/16" using a drill bit as a gauge.
