GPW exhaust pipe bond strap or dimensions

Post by Ian Fawbert » Mon Dec 28, 2009 1:35 am

Hi all,

Does anyone have one of the bond straps which attaches to the exhaust pipe (and i think back to the engine)? I have a kit from Ron, however it is no longer included in the kit he sells (as at november 09). I can supply a pic if that helps anyone to identify what i am after.

NOS, repro or used in good condition, i`ll take anything! Alternatively, can anyone give dimensions so i can make one? I have the braided strap so can easily make it if i knew sizes etc.

Thanks,
Ian.

Let me check my header pipe when I get home. Shoot me a PM to remind me. I cannot remember if the bond strap is intact. If it's NOT, I'll check the repro strap on Bob Shaw's jeep and get you those dimentions. If you end up making them, I'll take one if you didn't mind.

How goes the hardware order?

Hi guys,

Luke- i shall check AAW as Ian has said. If all else fails, i shall get back to you for details from yours/bobs. If i make one (which i likely will), i`ll make a few- one with your name on for sure. As for the hardware order, it has slowed down abit- christmas pulled me up on time! I shall get back into it after new years if thats ok?

Ian- Merry christmas and new years to you and the family too! It has been great so far- i ate alot, but dont feel like an elephant... so i shall keep on eating!
Thanks for the tip on AAW- i had forgotten about the bond strap info in there! I really should make a point of looking through the manuals on a more regular occurance- everytime i do, i find remember or even something new that i had missed on the previous read!

Cheers all,

Ian.

Ian, did you get your dimensions? I am away from home, but do have one that I removed from a slat header pipe. I can get the dimensions to you tomorrow night if need be. The strap is intact as well.

Ian, take your time. The jack is still yours and will be here until you are ready for it. Just remember, yours is the one WITHOUT the stampings on the base. :)

Hi USAFpj and Luke,

I have the dimensions out of AAW1 as Ian suggested. There are just a few dimensions i would like if possible to get from you as they arent as clear (or to me?) in AAW.

In AAW, it shows a rectangular piece which i assume wraps around the woven strap and the piece of iron which attaches to the header/exhaust pipe- can you tell me how big this is?
Also, what is the distance of the flat pice of iron between this wrap around strap and the beginning of the bend to go aroundthe header/exhaust pipe?

I dont suppose you could also comment on how it was attached to the pipe? Is it welded or soldered or brazed?

Luke- thanks mate! Will be in contact soon.

Thankyou,
Ian.

(I also had a pic of a ford marked one i saved from ebay, but i can no longer find it which is a bummer!)

Ian, the rectangular fold is 3/4ths inches in length, and is located 7/8ths inch from the bend. The wrapped piece comes close, but does not completely wrap around the entire flat portion of the iron. The bent portion is spot welded once on one side, and a one inch weld bead on the other. Any other measurements? If you need this as a model, PM me and I'll send it to you for a small trade.

Thankyou very much! Those will help immensely.

Thanks also for the generosity to send it along too, however i shall pass. I am happy to go off the pics you posted and AAW to try and make it. I dont necessarily need it, so i wont be greedy!

As a side note, i thought i would add this post in from Bill M with info about placement and connection for future reference.

Does any one have photos of the Strap attached to the pipe.

The photo I have (i'll scan later today) shows the strap attached to the pipe, Welded on, on the outboard side of the pipe.

It would great to get a dimension of how far down the pipe the strap is attached, what the welds look like, and orientation.

Thanks in advance.

John,
this photo is an enlargement from the well known batch of June 1942 WO factory images from the Life archive.
The GPW photographic equivalent still eludes me
cheers
Bill.
