Anyone make seat covers for spring seats???

Postby F. R. Fox » Fri Jun 08, 2012 9:52 pm

I just remade my passenger seat covers. The shelter half canvas doesn't hold up and becomes thin and tears after a year. So I remade my crash pads and back rest, and all came out excellent except for the passenger seat bottom....... I screwed up and made it sideways and I'm about to my last few yards of NOS canvas, and at my wits end! :( Making seat covers is a chore!

I see everyone sells foam filled seats but does anyone make canvas covers for spring seats? I need covers for my rear seat cushions soon!

Hey Farrell
Try www.newlifecanvas.com. They advertize cusion covers with the wire sown into the edges for spring set ups. I cannot comment on the quality of their products. As ive not purchased or seen any items from them  But im sure someone on here will tell you :)
Hope that helps.

Hi Nick,

I sent them an email and am gonna see if they have any in stock. My friend said he ordered me a canvas top from them for Christmas, but I never got it. So either he's a lying bastard or they lost the order, but we will see.

I have a repro set with the enclosed wire and cannot be more satisfied, there is a lot of precise labor involved to get them "just right", the fit is perfection. Correct O.D. Canvas seat cover material, too. It was well worth the wait.

The covers are actually not that difficult to make, (thats if you don't forget which peices were what and make them sideways  ) but they are time consuming. The hardest part is sewing in the wire frame and getting the machine to round the corners.

You just have to have the canvas to do it, of which I am running low on :( But I am getting lazy and will want a new set when this one wears out. Not to mention My MZ will need a set as well

Farrell,
How were these attached to the seat? is it similar to the standard way? I came across the springs, I think I have them all, but I'm not sure if mine used them.

Sean,

The edges attach directly to the seat frame using the screws and washers. The covers house the springs and hugs them tight against the seat frame. I add my own touch by placing a sheet of canvas between the springs and seat pans. This eliminates the anoying squeaking of the metal to metal contact. Makes for a quiet jeep ride.

The fat round wire that is sewn into the perimeter of the canvas can be seen in this pic:

The flat steel bandings that helps keep the shape of the perimeter wire and hold the canvas can be seen in this pic from Mark's MZ Radio jeep:

Atlas Royersford and Universal are two of the mfgers and there may be more who supplied Ford & Willys....

The steel banding is about 1/4" wide and almost 1/8" thick I believe....I don't have any "S" types here to check for you at the moment.

PS...note that the construction of the #1 pic is different from the #2 and #3.....I think #1 is perhaps Ford and the other two Willys, but nothing definitive to confirm that.

.....then we have the COIL type springs to try to fit into the scheme of things!

Nick is right, I forgot to mention the wire frames and metal retaining strips. Both are easily fabricated if needed. I am going to purchase new seat covers instead of making them.

My suggestion to anyone who wants to make thier own seats is to use Mildew and Water Treated canvas. If left untreated, my experience is they will dry rot or become brittle from direct sunlight. Shelter half canvas is also not siutable as the thin canvas frays and rips from normal use, especially around corners or edges.

I have a set of the late MB covers complete with the sewn in wire frames and replacement banding from New Life Canvas about a month ago. They are the same as on my originals and John Bizals and absolute perfection. The Canvas is the GI spec material as used for seats. If your original spring type cushions are suitable for recovering, this is the way to go. The quality and workmanship are perfection and the fit of the covers for both the seat back and bottoms are exact.
