Looking for M274 MULE in N. Ca

Post by Guam0311 » Wed Feb 07, 2018 7:53 am

Hello, New to the Forum. I would like to find a MULE to either restore or in good to decent drivable condition. Not to be to picky, but if it was born USMC that would be great. If not, I realize they are getting rare to find. I live up by Yuba City Ca. Thank you.

Hey Neighbor Gov't MULE "Up in Redding". Yes indeed, Thank you. I have been eye balling this MULE and it looks good however not sure how hard it is to replace the synchronizer? and the tooling up process. but maybe that's the fun behind it? or the curse. lol dollar bills and cussing.!

I been reading that there is a Military vehicle get to together , rally, show or whatever in Peteluma this year in April and there might be MULEs for sale.

Hey back atcha,
I'm not sure how easy or hard the synchronizer fix is; but one thing I do know is that there's somebody on this forum who does. You may want to do a search on the Mule tech pages. If that doesn't pan out then PM Chuck W. That man has forgotten more about the mules than the rest of us will ever know! All the best, Sully

Drain the trans lube and check for foreign particles brass or steel.

Replacing the synchronizer can be done with the trans and engine installed. Turn the mule on its side with the engine vent and fuel lever valves in the closed position. Or best, drain the oil and fuel then turn the mule gas tank down. You can stand the mule on its end but not necessary. Depending on ability the operation will take 4-6 hours.

Parts required:
Minimum
2ea blocking rings
3ea shift plates
2ea poppet springs
1ea cover gasket if you did not use heat on the cover to release the gasket
6ea shift shaft seals
1ea output shaft seal

Other options: depends upon inspection when trans is opened
1ea Synchronizer assy
1ea 1st-rev slider gear [if teeth are worn]
1ea 2nd speed gear [if synchronizer teeth are worn]
1ea input shaft assy [if synchronizer teeth are worn]
1ea Countercluster gear assy [if 1st gear teeth are worn]
4ea 205 bearings for main shaft, input shaft and intermediate gear
1ea Trans G/S set

Contact me for help or parts

If you want to replace the input shaft and seals then you will need to pull the engine.

That is valuable information and good to know that you have the parts. Question? ....The TM manual 9-2320-246-34 does that work in conjunction with TM 9-2520-224-35, which is a depot level transmission & axle assy rebuild? does one need both or just the -34? I see the "whiteworks" website does not have them, however "portrayalpress" site has them. I have yet to acquire them but I am in the process.
Thank you Muleman7 for the help.

The TM 9-2520-224-35 dated July 1958 was for the M274 transmission and front assys. That transmission is slightly different than the ones in the A1, A2, A4 and A5s. If you have the early transmission it is harder to work on when replacing the synchronizer assy because the 2nd-3rd shift shaft poppet ball is not externally accessible. Most internal parts are the same but the main shaft, input shaft, bearing / gear retainers and intermediate shaft are the main differences. The synchronizer assy is the same.

See the Post M274 page 2 the following link should take you there.

The TM 9-2320-246-34 will work well for the rebuild.

Just checked and Whiteworks has the TM 9-2320-246-34 listed
