Another clean mule just showed up on ebay

Post by Auto Shop teacher » Mon Jan 01, 2018 8:16 pm

Looks like that high priced mule smoked out some more mules for sale. This one is really clean, but from what I am seeing with the 4 wheel steer, 4 cyl engine guard with the extensions for the 2 cyl engine, I am not sure why it would have an aluminum bed and production date making it an A5 mule. Thoughts?

Is it an A5 with added 4WS and early engine guard, or early mule with an A5 bed? suspect the first, but would need a close look under it to tell for sure. Also note the non-original top engine shroud, may be one of the ones John Emery is making. As far as I know, Bill Watson is the only one who made any of the stainless steel fuel tanks, I think all of John Every's are aluminum. Oddly enough, I already have this mule in my database, although no owner's name.
Good looking mule nonetheless, will be interesting to see what the reserve is.

I called the guy up and we chatted for some time. He says it has another deck on it because the original one was in bad shape. He also said it has the spacer blocks between the deck and the frame, and he sent me a photo of the conversion tag on the transaxle showing it being converted to an A5 by Deco Grand Inc. on 4/79. Chuck can you send me your email address so I can send you a photo of the conversion stickers?

He also added that the engine and transaxle were gov surplus crate engine that was put in the mule after it was sold to the public, so perhaps it is an 274 or A1 made into an A3 or A4.
