Window Block - What to do with a junk engine?
I'm gonna cut windows in it and make one of those teaching aid engines that you see. They do it to all kinds of things like weapons to show how the internals work. So I have this engine that basically destroyed itself and the cam bore in the block is junk. Reference thread here for those people that are about to freak out and can't believe I'm cutting up a Mule engine viewtopic.php?f=79&t=267953&p=1645629#p1645629. I made a very small start today. I'm currently trying to show the lubrication path for the cam and lifters as well as how the lifters follow the lobes of the cam.
I did make one mistake already - I should have painted the block before I started cutting. It would have made a nice affect to see the aluminum surfaces where it's cut. Oh well. Tons of masking in the future..........
First slice
This is all I got done today.

That's a neat idea! I have a complete spare engine mounted on a transaxle housing that is currently on display in the mule section of the Werner Museum in Monteagle, TN. Your project would make a great addition!

Paint the cut parts red or something so they stand out between the silver internal and the green external in my opinion. Looks like a fun project

Made a few more cuts today.
I think I'm going to take the cut on the oil galley feeds for the lifters farther into the lifter bore so you can see how that actually works.

I think I'm done cutting holes in the block. Now to clean it and paint it and put the crank and cam back in. The start on the other parts.

Re: Window Block - What to do with a junk engine?
I've been working on this a little here and there. Thought I'd share some pictures.
This I found it interesting how the outside of the steel cylinder sleeve has teeth/groove/threads on it to hold the aluminum cast fins to it. Or possibly to make more surface area to transfer more heat to the aluminum?
I was also unaware that the valves had rotators in the retainer.
So as I put it further and further together it gets harder to turn. The ring tension made a big difference. I'll have to find some really lightweight springs for the valves. I need to make some kind of turning wheel or crank for it. Does anyone have a junk crankshaft pulley? All I need is the center hub rather than have to make one. I was thinking maybe one that had cracked getting it off?

Beautiful Dr Lance! They needed that 50 years ago to help train those young GI mechanics!
Remember the word "expert".....An "EX" is a has been.... and a "SPERT" is a little drip...

Got a little more done on this....I need to figure out a way to light the inside of the cylinders. Drill a hole in the top of the piston and put a LED in it? Thru the spark plug hole?
I also need to paint the cylinder/head studs. Funny how it looks fine till you take a picture of it.....

That looks awesome! Drill a hole in the piston. You could fine some kind of wall wart and light at the hardware store to rig it up. Since there aren't any more radio shack stores around.

Re: Window Block - What to do with a junk engine?
Been a while. I've pretty much taken this as far as I can with the parts I have and of course the parts I need are either expensive or hard to find. Oh well, there's no rush. It turns over very easily by hand using the red crank I made for the pulley. Might be because it was a tad worn out and everything is loose? Either way it turns.
Anyways on to the pictures.
