M274A1 dataplates

Post by Chuck W. » Sun May 21, 2017 7:54 pm

I am looking for information from M274A1 owners. According to my information, the M274A1 model was built by Willys from 1962 until 1964. But, Willys sold out to Kaiser Jeep Corp. in 1963, so, do the early M274A1 data plates show Willys Motor Co. and the late A1 plates show Kaiser Jeep Corp.? I had assumed that Kaiser Jeep Corp. performed the A1-to-A4 conversions, and that still may be true, but I have recently seen a couple of A1 data plates showing a 1964 date with Kaiser Jeep Corp. as the manufacturer. I'd like to see photos of pre-1963 and post 1963 M274A1 data plates to see if I can determine at what point the manufacturer name changed. Thanks!

My TM 9-2320-213-20P Aug 1963 pg 57 shows the same
My TM 9-2320-213-10 Jly 1963 pg 10 Shows the M274 as Mfg By Willys Motors Inc and the M274-A1 as Mfg By Kaiser Jeep Corp. This was sent to WhitWorks and is posted.

Thanks! The photo of your data plate is what got this started! Plus, I have two CJ3B jeeps, the 1953 has a Willys Motor Co. data plate and the 1964 has a Kaiser Jeep Corp. data plate, it got me to thinking about the name change on the mules. Now I need to see an early A1 data plate.

Thanks, Charles, I never thought about it before, but I had to order a new data plate for my 1964 CJ3B and only one person makes the correct reproduction plate with Kaiser Jeep Corp. on it, and it got me to thinking. I have several photos of M274A4 data plates with Kaiser Jeep Corp., but elsasser7122's photo got me to thinking about the A1 mules. Apparently Willys sold out to Kaiser Jeep Corp. in 1963, but I don't know when they actually started changing the name on the data plates.

The A1 plate shown in that TM is #935659-B, I wonder if there was a plate #935659 that had Willys Motors Co. on it?

Charles, do you recall if the A3/A4 conversion kits you and Tom had included new data plates and drive rivets

Chuck

Yes the Retrofit kits had all the deck plates I believe for both mules plus the rivets. I have a number of NOS A4s but only 1 A3?????????

One of the NOS A4s states by Bowen-McLaughlin-York, Inc Plate # 10645110-2 the other NOS states by Kaiser Jeep Corporation Plate # 10945110-2

Charles, can you let me know what the contract # is on these two plates, please? Thanks! I would also like to know the contract number on the A3 plate that you have, photos of all the plates would be even better!

So, I am still looking for a pre-1963 M274A1 plate.

Thanks, Charles. This will take some time to digest. This has answered a couple of questions, but raised a few new ones!
