Two odd Mule pictures - one because it is extreme, the other, why yellow?

Interesting modification to the bed rails on the yellow mule, also note the recoil starter cable has not retracted, probably a 4-cylinder!

Re: Cool Mule Pictures
I was told by a vet that Mules were used as flight line vehicles during the VN period because they could go under planes with their low profile, might explain the yellow color.

Was that a common problem on the 4 cyl mules? Did the problem get resolved with the 2 cyl conversions?Chuck W. wrote:Interesting modification to the bed rails on the yellow mule, also note the recoil starter cable has not retracted, probably a 4-cylinder!

Yes. The recoil unit was built into the flywheel (no ring gear on the flywheel) and the "dogs" were very bad to become disengaged. Had to pull the engine to fix. This is one of the reasons it is so difficult to install an electric starter on the 4-cylinders; it requires a lot of machine work to make a ring gear fit.Was that a common problem on the 4 cyl mules? The 2-cylinder uses the bell housing-mounted recoil unit which has a starter-type pinion driving a flywheel ring gear..
