How Many Mules Still Operating

Post by gpw6335 » Sat Sep 17, 2016 7:49 am

How about some guesses on how many mules are still out there. Half being left or destroyed in Southeast Asia out of approximately 11,000 produced. My guess 1800-2000 . What do you think?

I would guess less than a thousand. I think Chuck would have a better guess seeing as he has been collecting serial numbers for years.

Half being left or destroyed in Southeast Asia
Not sure where that comes from, I've heard it before, but doubt it's true. Almost every photo of a mule in Vietnam is a 4-cylinder, and there were only about 4,400 total 4-cylinder mules built, and we know many of those 4-cylinder mules survived, along with many converted to the A3 and A4 variants we see today. My guess is there are 4 to 5K left around the world.

Well, I really like the A2 models, and buy them whenever I can, but if money was no object, I'd look for the highest serial number Brunswick Corp. A5 that I could find and add 4-wheel steer.

We just got our second 4 cylinder mule running & driving(for the first time in many, many years) last week.
The restoration of our early '58 mule is almost done. The late '64 A1 mule is in barn find condition & will likely stay that way.

I asked John Emery the same question - he reckoned the figure is between 2000 and 3000 still running.

I know personally of 7 or 8 (1 in rebuild) and considering they are all imports to the UK that isn't bad. I recently spent 3 weeks travelling Vietnam, I saw lots of Mutts and Reos but not a single Mule, not even in museums

I guess I was way out in left field saying so few. I know there were at least 24 at Iola wi show this year, some of the guys here were in that count. I had 4 running sold 3 of them, have to to rebuild I know auto teacher has several running or not I don't know, seen a lot of them that are just parts mules.
it is interesting traveling with the mule, so many people have never seen one or know what they are.
I guess I am drawn to the vehicles that are not so commonly found,
