Electronic ignition
I'm curious about switching a mule to electronic ignition. Can anyone share their knowledge and or experiences they have had with this subject?
Thanks
Dave

Re: Electronic ignition
The Mules I built for the Chessie System Cincinnati, OH had the original 2cyl magneto converted to electronic ignition. The pick-up module attached in the place of the points and I did not have to modify the lobe of the rotor. I used an off the shelf Prestolite kit and a 2 post coil [Harley style]. They ran flawlessly. I will check my records-parts and post the part #s if found.

This is the electronic ignition kit I bought. as you can see it is really small. Has anyone seen or used one of these? I will let you all know how it works. I will also let you know if it doesn't.

Re: Electronic ignition
I converted an old AMF snowblower with a 9hp techamseh engine to the Nova electronic ignition with good results. Don't know if it would work on the mule though.

Re: Electronic ignition
I'll let you know after I test it. I've been pretty busy getting the new mule ready for it's début at KCR machine gun shoot.

Re: Electronic ignition
I've been busy and haven't had a chance to test it. Hope to test after the first of the year. I'll post my findings here soon.

Re: Electronic ignition
It appears that the electronic ignition unit pictured gets rid of the standard condenser used on points ignition. If that is so, what part handles the voltage spike in the primary circuit when the magnetic field in the ignition field collapses and the coil fires. Or, am I missing something here.

Re: Electronic ignition
Another solution I have used on other pieces of equipment and should work well with the Mule is a Transistorized ignition as opposed to the Electronic Ignition. It still uses the points but gets rid of the condenser. A benefit of keeping the points is timing can be adjusted by adjusting the point gap. The current through the points is greatly reduced so there is very little point wear. The entire circuit is enclosed in a small metal can about the size of a capacitor.
I get my parts from Kirk Engines. They also have a dual coil for 2 cylinder engines.

Re: Electronic ignition
From what I am seeing on the electronic ignition module and the instructions that came with it I see no triggering pickup coil to turn on/off the transistor so I am having a hard time understanding how it will work. You need the coil to fire near the end of the compression stroke and there is nothing shown on how to time the spark.
