Need a camper shell that my mule will fit inside of

Post by Auto Shop teacher » Mon Feb 23, 2015 8:16 pm

I have watched the videos by Portrayal Press in getting their mule home and they finally had to remove the camper shell to get their mule inside.

I have an 2003 Ford F250 super duty with an 8' bed on it and want to buy a top for the bed but I cannot find one tall enough to clear the steering wheel. That and the width of the rear door at 32" above the bed is too narrow for the mule to fit without removing the side rails and the corner loops.

Any ideas?

I don't have any suggestions, but I did have to read your post three times before I figured out you were looking for a camper shell for the pickup - that would be large enough to fit your Mule in the pickup with the camper shell still installed on the pickup.

Initially I thought you were looking for a camper shell to install on the Mule.

I could not figure out how that was going to work.

Thanks for the response, I should have worded it much better.

I am looking for a camper shell for my 2003 Ford F250 long bed pickup that has a big enough opening for me to load my mule inside the bed. I am having problems finding one with enough clearance for the steering wheel and deck width as a mule is about 50" high at the steering wheel and the deck and side rails are 33" high and 49" wide. The Leer 122 and the ARS model TM are a few inches short.

What if you back it on to the truck and tilt the steering wheel to come out of the back. That idea may not be the best solution, but I don't know of a topper that will be that tall.
You could make extensions for your bed sides to raise the topper to the height you need. Obviously there will be a gap between the tailgate and topper door. No? well there 's always a tarp. Just being funny, not trying to a smart A.

With a little ingenuity you could fabricate a hinged mount for the cap that would unlatch and raise the rear of the cap up to load the mule.

A S T...you need to get an M1008 with the vinyl cargo cover...remove foot basket, put mule in truck with engine to front, 4' blocks under front wheels, close tailgate, and you're good to go...W

The problem is that I have a big camping trailer that requires me to take the mule in the bed of the truck. I would agree that a small trailer would be the simplest option otherwise.

Thanks for the ideas, I think I will load a mule in my PU bed and take it over to our camper shell dealer and see what fits.
