Magneto Problem

Postby Jerry Denny » Tue May 29, 2012 4:54 pm

I have no spark in my two cylinder mule.
I have removed the magneto from the engine. Then, I removed the points and cleaned under them to insure a good ground. I have also cleaned all the ends of the wires. At this point I started checking continuity with my trusty ohm meter. I decided to attach one of the meters leads to the end red wire leading to the coil at the spark plug contacts (remember – nothing but the ohm lead is attached to it at this point) and touch the other lead to the case. The meter instantly reads 0 ohms. Should this be? It doesn’t seem correct that both sides of the points would be grounded. Or, have I found the problem?

Jerry, do you have an hour meter on your mule? If so, unplug it and try to see if you get a spark. One of my mules wouldn't crank, it turned out that the hour meter had shorted out and grounded. By unplugging the hour meter, I removed the ground and the mule started right up.
