Machine Gun Mount

Post by PBRstreetgang » Fri Jun 25, 2010 7:35 am

Hello,

I recently bought a 1919a4 and want to mount it on my m274 once I get the form 4 back (likely in Nov). I'm looking for any pics and/or information regarding a machine gun mount and how its attached to the mule w/o altering anything. Yes, I've already seen, most if not all of, the 1919 related websites that sell the mounts and was hoping someone here may have already done the same thing. Please post what you have or what you've seen.

Thanks in advance,
PBR

PBR welcome

I used the search feature at the top left of the page and found this old thread that I posted a while back showing my homemade mount for my 1919A4 that I had on my mule.

Ohh yes, now I see how those parts are used...that's awesome! Do you have any pics of the gun mounted on the mule? I'm wondering what height pedestal I should use - 12", 18", etc...?

Thanks,
PBR

PBR,

Here is a picture of one of my Mules and the 1919A4. When I was trying to determine to height to make the pedstal, I decided that I would never be shooting the 1919A4 while the mule was moving, so I made the pedstal to be a good comfortable height to shoot when standing next to me mule. This way I can use the mule as a 4 wheeled tripod (if this make any sense).

The best thing about this setup is that you can unbolt the pedstal, replace the round hole cover and you are ready to go.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I have no intention of driving while shooting (DWS) either and know exactly what you mean regarding the, "4 wheeled tripod." What you have/had is effectively what I want to get or have made. Thanks for the pics and post some more if you have them.

These pictures might help a little. I'd gotten some information from Rod and used part of what he posted as
his solution. I found a used M-142 long pintle here on the G. I bought a socket pedestal from BMG Parts. While the 1919 would look neat, I wanted to go w/ the M60 look. We had a couple of Mules in my helicopter unit and someone had made gun Mules out of them. They used the M60D model on the gun Mules as it had the dual triggers and handles instead of a more traditional machine gun w/ a stock and pistol grip. A stack of sandbags on the deck and more bags on the ground and one had a formidable moving bunker!

I then build a pedestal out of pipe and some 1/2" plate. You probably need to find someone w/ a plasma cutter
to cut the round base piece. It was slightly smaller than the hole in the Mule deck. It sat on the recessed part and was a snug, flat fit on the deck. Using gussets and the pipe I then welded it all together. I drilled holes in in the top of the pipe
and the pedestal and used a stainless bolt and nut to hold it together.

Here is where I differ w/ Rod's technique: I cut a similar piece that was larger than the hole and used it under the deck.
1/2" holes were drilled through the upper piece of the pedestal. I drilled additional holes in the bottom piece. I don't remember the specific size but these were tapped to 1/2-13. I marked the front of both pieces to make the assembly simpler.

It takes two people to assemble the pedestal and lower plate. Once I got that far, I realized that this assembly was very
sturdy and did not need to tie the assembly into the frame tubes. Actually, I hooked my winch cable from my car trailer into the top of the socket and pulled on the assembly. The Mule came up on 2 wheels and the assembly did not move. Sturdy enough for the use.

If a lower plate picture would be helpful to anyone, I'll take it apart. I have to do that when it is painted but that is lower
on my list of things to do.

That post was 8 years ago and now Photobucket does not allow photo linking any more. Rod is no longer dealing with mules, having sold all his mules and parts. You might do a search of this forum and you might find the original posts.

I have a M25 Jeep pedestal mount and Browning 1919A4 mount for it which mounts on my M274A5 Mule. I had a custom aluminum frame mount made for the mule. I don't know if this old link will work, but all is still for sale. I hope the pictures still show.
