Odd Data Plate
Don't know if many of you visit the mule forum over at Steel Soldiers, but there's a pretty interesting thread on an unusual M274A2 data plate. Has the manufacturer listed as Baifield, registration number KM000016, and a contract number of DA-11-184-AMC-39(T). It also has a Continental engine data plate with matching registration and contract numbers stamped in it. The machine data plate is also brown, instead of the usual black. Below are a couple of photos provided by the owner of this mule.
I've asked David Doyle if he can find anything on this contract number, it does not match anything in my records. I was under the impression that all A2's were built by Bowen-McLaughin-York, and that Baifield Industries only built the first contract A5's. Any input?? Is it possible that Baifield did the M274-to-M274A3 conversions? Why would it be tagged as an A2??

Re: Odd Data Plate
Well I would not take ANYTHING as original or correct on that plate. It is a "replacement plate" NOT a foctory plate. And it being an A2 plate makes it even more suspect to me. Being the former owner of MV Data plates before selling to David Kelone. I found that the most available "surplus" plate available was the M274A2 plate. It may not even be an A2. The other thing is the contract number is the sameas the motor and that simply is not possible. Sooo, my opinion would be NOT to use this for any type of reference material.

Re: Odd Data Plate
... Sorry for bringing back an old tread but that's my mule you're talking about and I need some help.. yes before I got it some must of stamped the plate with numbers they saw off the engine ( not ME) soo I don't know what mine is it's been 6 years now and doing a final restoration on it. Is anyone willing to answer my questions on this subject? I can tell you what my mule has on it and maybe we can find a model that suits it? and maybe serial number?

Re: Odd Data Plate
Can you post photos of your mule? front, back, both sides and engine, plus the top of the deck. Also brake drum and rear bed supports. Should be able to come up with something.

Re: Odd Data Plate
After looking at your photos and going through my reference material, I think your BMY0025 mule is, in fact, a very early Bowen-McLaughin-York M274A2, built in 1965. The earliest BMY serial number I have is BMY0034, and it also has the early style engine data plate. It's registration number is 310213, so yours should be something like 310204. Have you tried gently sanding the areas on the side of the bed to see if you can recover any of the registration numbers? Your deck appears to be an original A2 deck, not an M274 or M274A1.
I would suggest you contact John Emery as he has done extensive research on M274 data plates and has now reproduced all the different variants of plates. I also believe the brown data plate was a poor reproduction plate from the late 70's. Nice find, good luck with your restoration, and keep us posted on your progress.

Ok I'll look on the sides I'm blasting the bed with walnut shells by the driver side when I get to the passenger side I'll take a look and see if I can slowly uncover some numbers IF any. as per your request I got pictures for ya.
Bed data plate if it's an A5 bed why does it have the magnesium warning data plate?
Engine hatch cover hooks
Bed supports past starter.
Break drum.
engine guard.
Foot basket

Re: Odd Data Plate
Why do you think it is an A5 deck? It is obviously magnesium, I can tell by the pitting, it has the steering change-over opening, and the magnesium warning plate, everything I see says to me that it is an M274A2. Somebody has put a hodge-podge of data plates on it. I'd stick with BMY0025 as the serial number. If you find any registration numbers painted on the bed, I can confirm it. Otherwise, I'd go with the 310204 as the number. As I said, John Emery can supply you with the correct A2 plates for this mule.
BTW, data plates came from the factory with this style drive rivet, NOT pop rivets.
