I always wish Erie ,Pa would adopt a sub or ship. A barge and tug could move the sub to a new home. Just who wants a WW II sub?

I'd REALLY love to see her join the battleship NEW JERSEY in Camden- it would be an EXCELLENT location- and her postwar refitted sister ship BECUNA is right across the river, co-located with the OLYMPIA.

With the success of the USS INTREPID museum in the Hudson River, you'd think this would be a fantastic addition to their "fleet". I say, truck it out of the muck, move it to a barge, take it to a shipyard and do what is necessary to get her in condition as a floating museum. We have the SS JEREMIAH O'BRIAN and the USS PAMPANITO and narrowly missed out on the USS IOWA which was mothballed in Suisun Bay....the USS HORNET is across the bay in Alameda.

Please don't let this one succumb to the rust and be cut up for scrap!

when it comes to the big dollars to salvage an historic ship, I think the Olimpia should take precedence.

Hello ,

I agree !

The Olympia should be saved and sent to the Boston Navy Yard and restored and be preserved there with their ships,
including the USS Constitution !!

It is disgraceful the way that ship is left to rot in Philly , then get this submarine up to the Intrepid location or Charleston, SC !!

The cruiser Des Moines was offered as a museum ship a few years back and they couldn't find a home for her either. Another big disgrace was when in 1958 to 60 the USS Enterprise ended up cut up for scrap in New Jersey. CV6 was the most decorated ship in Navy history and they couldn't save it either. She earned 20 of 22 battle stars awarded in the Pacific Theater.

MARAD has dropped the numbers of reserve ships dramatically in the last 5 - 10 years - I think there used to be something close to 300 ships tied up at Suisun it's now 10 as of June 2018... All gone to scrap

One of the Microsoft guys is out trying to find historic shipwrecks in 10,000 feet of water or more where they spend more than it would take to recover, restore and spiff up the "USS LING" in a month of off-shore deep diving with robots. Again, this would be a good draw next to the "USS MISSOURI" in Pearl Harbor because of the numbers of Japanese ships and tonnage that the subs did compared to all other Navy vessels (including carriers). Hell, if the BuOrd didn't have their collective donkeys up you-know-where, the submariners would have ended the war a year earlier simply by starving out the Home Islands by sinking most of the Japanese Merchant Marine. In addition, not to mention the subs doing Lifeguard duty for pilots or recon, they would have also wiped out the IJN whenever they came out of home ports.

This sub isn't a project like a carrier or battleship, its a teensy-weensy vessel with under a hundred crewmen.

I believe there is a WW2 sub on display in O’ahu. What I find interesting about the article I saw on line about the sub, it is interesting that the Navy says they don’t own it. My understanding is all this stuff like ships is on loan from Uncle Sam and if it is not taken care of by the organization it was given to, the government will come and take it away from them. MARAD has a vessel donation program for museums and memorials - the way I read the language is the vessel or artifact becomes the property of the organization running the museum or memorial, I am sure there is something to the effect of the organization is bound to care for the items and provide public access to them...

The Bowfin is a work in progress just like every other ship but it is done well and matches nicely with the submarine memorial shore side and museum which is chock full of very well signed and displayed artifacts.

They have a pretty perfect location right at the Pearl Visitors Center
