Value of old weasel tracks

Post by Lew Ladwig » Mon Jan 11, 2016 6:09 am

I have some weasel tracks. The steel is in fair condition. The rubber bands are shot. The road pads are about 75% there. What is something like this worth? May consider selling them.

Really hard to say. Find the right guy that needs a set of tracks and who knows. Recently, a guy was selling (3) "good" used tracks for $750 in Alaska CL. I thought that was a good deal not seeing them of course. "Good" can vary- LOL. Shipping probably kills the value and they are bulky items to keep around for spare parts. I think they are probably worth at least a couple hundred bucks as is. Probably worth more if you took them apart and sold good grousers with intact pads individually if you were trying to maximize money and don't mind some work. I would like to get an extra set at some point- just so I have a few spare grousers. There are a couple local guys that have a few extra tracks in poor condition that I will probably try to pick up at some point. The original grousers don't hold up well in the forest with rocks and tree roots etc. I have an extra set of French tracks that are in poor condition. Not really sure what I want to do with those either. I like how they are heavy duty and would hold up in the rough stuff, but hate how heavy they are. I imagine they are much harder on drivetrain parts. Also, most of my connecting/hinge pieces are shot and they are much more difficult to repair than the original tracks. Either way- don't throw them out. Somebody will need them.

Just my thoughts.

I bought one track for the parts for $100 at Aberdeen a few years back (4 ?). I figure to use it for spare shoes when (if) I get around to rebanding my track and or rebanding it while taking one or two shoes off mine to build a good track.
So value? more than scrap, even more to a guy that has a Weasel.

I rebuilt a set of Type 3 track back in 2005. I used a 220 Arc Welder and Carbon Rods to blow the rivets out. I turned the amperage up to the maximum then just touched the head of the rivet. GGSZHTT, and the rivets were gone instantly. I burned the outer 6 rivets on each grouser out which took about 2 minutes on each grouser. Then used 3 ply conveyer belt material, grade 8 bolts, fender washers and poly-lock nuts to hold everything together.
If I had known about the repro bands then, I would have bought and installed them instead. If I ever run into another weasel again and can buy it, I will go that route next time.
