Marine Corp Tactical Markings LVT3 Okinawa PHOTOS ADDED

Postby Kevin Lockwood » Thu Feb 07, 2008 3:25 pm

Just picked up a photo of a KO'd LVT4 and LVT3 at sugarloaf on Okinawa. Does any one know how to decipher tactical mrkgs.? The LVT3 has the colored bars and the letters 4-C-20 large above C 7 much smaller.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Maybe showing us the photo will help?

The land battle of Okinawa was under the 10th Army... my documents say that was the 1st and 6th Marine Divisions with the 2nd in reserve and 7th and 96th Infantry divisions with the 27th and 77th as garrison.

So, Army or USMC?

The marking as you note them do not appear to be USMC.

Mark thanks for the reply. My books show the 6th Div USMC 22nd and later the 29th regiments were engaged at Sugarloaf. The LVT3 was used (as far as I know) by USMC only. The photo is credited on reverse to a USMC photographer. I am having the photo enlarged hoping to make out some of the smaller writing on the ramp and sponsons. The vehicle I am restoring had stampings internally which reflect a connection to the 1st Div USMC.

OK, here are the Division tac marks.

You find anything that looks like the 1st or 6th?

Finally able to scan this photo. Hopefully the G can help me decipher the markings on the rear ramp.

Well, not much help but FWIW...

MAJOR CAMPAIGNS THAT THE LVT- (C)-3 "BUSHMASTER" PARTICIPATED IN:
OKINAWA

D-Day 01 April 1945
Unit Involved:
1st Amphibian Tractor Bn comprised of (108) LVT- (C)-3s
4th Amphibian Tractor Bn comprised of (102) LVT- (C)-3s

So, the 4 may be for the 4th and the 20 as 20 out of 102?

Weird... there are no tac marks.
