The Suncoast Model Flyers presents their 2014 Military Spectacular on the Anzac weekend, Sunday April 27th

This huge military spectacular is a tribute to our servicemen and women and will feature not only radio control aircraft, but full size warplanes and vehicles as well.

At 8.15am an Army helicopter from the Army Air Base at Oakey will fly in. Gates will open at 8.30 and members of the public will be able to chat to the pilots and crawl over the aircraft to their heart’s content.

The radio control aircraft display will commence at 9am. The Suncoast Model Flyers have sourced only the very best display pilots and their aircraft from around the country, visitors can certainly expect an exciting ‘low and close’ air show. These giant size scale model aircraft show case a wide range of military planes including piston engine warbirds, genuine turbine jets and helicopters. Speeds will vary from slow flybys from the World War 1 biplanes and triplanes, through to jets exceeding 300 kilometers per hour. The helicopter display includes, a Cobra attack helicopter, AS550, and other military helis.

At midday we ground the radio control aircraft to make way for the full size aerobatic display. Warbirds Sunshine Coast will kick off with a formation fly-by in their Military Russian Yak-52 and Yak-18T. The Yak-18T will be flown by world renowned aerobatic pilot Nigel Arnot, and the Yak-52 will be flown by one of Australia’s top aerobatic show pilots Tony Chamberlin. Prepare yourself for an unbelievable display as Nigel and Tony toss these big, lumbering war birds around the sky. This will be the first time both these aircraft have performed together.

As we farewell the Yaks a procession of old vehicles and vintage motorcycles will parade around the flying field for the public to enjoy. These vehicles and motorcycles will also be on display all day and people are welcome to get close to them and chat to their owners.

As the vehicles clear the runways we look skywards again for the arrival of the Ramblers parachutists who will be trailing colored smoke from their flares. They will be landing on the main runway right in front of the main viewing area.

Once the parachutists are down and clear the radio control air show will re commence and go right through to 3pm.

At 3pm the Army helicopter will depart down the main runway bound for their home base at Oakey.

Throughout the day, in the display area behind the flight lines, there will be so much more for the public to enjoy. The Moreton Bay Radio Control Tank Club will demonstrate their military tanks, truly amazing high tech scale models.

Warbirds Sunshine Coast, who showcased their Yaks in action, will also be on the ground for people to take advantage of a special show deal for a ride in one of these magnificent war birds, definitely a good time to tick off this thrill of a life time from the old ‘bucket list’

Riders from the Light Horse will be dressed in period costume and will mingle through crowd, members of the public will be able to chat to the riders and find out more about the history of these magnificent horses.

The Caloundra Air Museum will have a hands on display, plus the Ramblers Sky Divers will be on hand for people to chat about this fantastic sport, and have a chance to tick off another definite ‘bucket list’ item.

The littlies haven’t been forgotten either. Toy Town will offer jumping castles, a miniature train, face painting, fairy floss and other fun things for them to do.

Plus great food and drinks available all day.

All this for a nominal entry fee with pensioner discounts and children under 10 free.

The Suncoast Model Flyers’ Military Spectacular, keeping the spirit of our Anzacs alive. Definitely a day out for the whole family and an event not to miss.

Supported by the Sunshine Coast and Regional District RSL Sub Branches.

I recall this event was mentioned briefly at the last general meeting. I don`t how many, if any, indicated their intention to attend.

There were about forty members at that meeting, which leaves about 500 members unaware of the forthcoming event, given there is no mention of it in our CR Magazine, that is little wonder.

I have written before about the lack of information in the events calendar on this website. I am aware a senior member of the clubs committee is not in favor of promulgating events on this site, but rather use the CR Mag as a means of advising events, which of course, does not always happen.

Executive committee, please update the calendar whenever events come to hand as many members rely on our website to keep abreast of happenings. This may save the last minute calls for help!
