Re: Early Bell Housing
Hi guys,
after a too long absence from the hobby, I'm starting up a new Willys project.
In my parts search, I've come along 2 different bell housings, hence my re-activation of this thread.
Reading this post with a lot of interest, I concluded the following criteria (please do correct me if needed!):
speedo cable provision
My second housing is still a bit of a mystery to me though.
This one has weld marks and an added clutch cable hole...
The speedo cable provision is however completely absent...
It also hasn't got the wartime part number, but another one stamped near the added hole:
Any thoughts or comments on the latter are more than welcome.
Nevertheless, happy to be "back in business"
Cheers!

speedo cable provision
- Type 1: no provision
- Type 2: flat provision
- Type 3: embossed provision
- Type 1: welding marks visible
- Type 2: no marks visible

These posts might help you some.

The threaded hole on the side of the bell housing was for the Hand brake cable not the Speedo cable.
There is a date code cast onto the inside of the bell housing that shows month and day of casting. (Willys only not GPW) This will sometimes help in identifying the type of housing.
In looking at the picture of the rusty Bellhousing, I wonder if that could be a prewar Willys passenger car housing.

Re: Early Bell Housing
Cast on January 1.
Hard to give a year without some other details. Does it have the raised boss or not? “Horse shoe” in the casting?
