This is what the hinge looks like. The part with the four large holes is spot welded to the hood and then the hat channels are spot welded on top.

Mike,
many thanks for your reply and photo. I never saw an original hood hinge before.Tks !
Sorry I disturb you again, but do you have a photo of the hinge already put on the hood ?
I saw one, but I can't remember where, a photo of the hinge with a small steel suplement. This is what I need to show to the paint shop guy to copy.
Tks again in advance for your help.

Charlie.

Here is a pic of how it goes...hinge first, right and left channel pieces next and the reinforcement on top, centered over the channel seam

Hi Marc,
I asked the same question a few months ago and never received any replies. I only ever saw one original hinge for sale and that was on ebay and it went for some ridiculously high price for a hinge, however if you need one bad enough, I quess you would pay the price. There are no repros made that I am aware of. The only repro hood hinge made is one for the late war/early Cj type hinge(not what you need). You can get a NOS one of these on ebay(or .), but like I said it is not what you ar looking for. What I am doing is looking for a beat-up, ratty nasty hood that has a good hinge and I will take the hinge from that. Dont know if I will ever come across one of these, but that is the plan.

Marc,

http://www.jeepest.com/

does sell NOS WOF hood hinges.
Check "ailes et capot MB"

These hood hinges do look similar to the hinges in Jim Kilbourne's picture,
but the small part has 6 flaps interacting with 7 flaps on the big part.

Eagle also advertises NOS MB hinges for €20.00. I don't know if they are also correct for a slatgrill.

Hi guys,
I just wanted to point out that none of the above photos seem to show a correct hood hinge for a slat grill.

It's true the number of tabs for a slat grill hood hinge should be 9.
But the first and last tab are only slightly shorter than the middle 7.
The photos above show the 1st and 2nd as really short, then the next one is really long. with the middle 5 being the same length.

I am in the process of restoring my hood right now. It is a early hood with airdeflector and black primer and it has the same hinge as in the photos.
I checked my other hoods "1 early ford script hood with dimples for airdeflector bolts holes but were never drilled, 1 43 mb hood, and 2 44 mb hoods and they all have 11 loops on the hinge so i would assume the 9 loop in the photo is correct for slat grill.

All period photos of slat grills I have seen (that actually show the hinge)
Show a 9 tab hinge with the center 7 tabs all being the same length, and the two outside tabs being slightly shorter.
You can see this in several photos in Farleys book.
I have modern photos of 5 different slat grills with this hinge.
Two of which I own.
The measurements are:
The 7 in the middle are 1 23/32"
The two on the ends are 1 7/16"

All Ford GPW hinges are 11 tabs. ( I'm not a GPW guy so if you know different speak up)
When the Willys MB changed to the ACM type II body in late 1943, the ford style 11 tab hinge was used.
The hinge on my 47 CJ-2A is also an 11 tab hinge.

The only period photograph using the above hinge that I have seen,
(9 tabs, middle 5 same length, outside 2 real short, next tab in real long)
was an early 1943 MB.
It should be noted that this '43 MB still had the type II air deflector installed. (type I air deflector was only for low windshield slats)
There is a modern photo using this hinge in AAW volume II. page 229.
it is a willys style hood. It is not mentioned what year this is but it's obviously not a slat grill.

But no, this isn't the end of the story.
there is also a 15 tab hinge out there. and I have no idea where it came from. I have one which was an obvious replacement, and I saw one on someone else’s jeep.

Chris both of the hinges on my Slat hoods show exactly what you describe. One of the hoods had an late early hood number. So I know that this one is for sure a slat grill hood. They both have type 2 deflectors.
