Hi, I have a 1941 mb engine, out of a 1943 Ford as i am doing a ground up restoration.
If it helps for your records, the engine number is MB100356 and where the sump bolts up next to one of the big ends i presume it is the date that says 8 - 23 - 41

i have pictures but they are bigger than 2 mega bytes.
let me know if it helps,
cheers, Byron

Hi Byron,
The slat engines are rare. You probably could sell it off to get a GPW engine and still have a chunk of money to throw at the engine rebuild. Just some food for thought.
Good luck,
Andy

Hi Andy, I spoke to my brother about having a willys engine in a Ford chassis, and it's not something that really bothers me too much as I know it was a standard procedure to rip one engine out to be rebuilt and plonk one back in from the rebuilt shelf.
It wasn't until he told me to get on here to hand in the engine number.

I've just had the crank ground, the bores rebored, head skimmed, top of the block skimmed, manifold skimmed, new pistons and rings, all new shells. All new valves, valve guides and hardened valve seats put in.

The big ends and mains are 30s and 40s. But without looking I can't remembe which way round.
The bores are +30s

I rebuilt the engine less than 3 weeks ago but haven't fired it up yet until I put it in the chassis.
I would consider perhaps looking for a Ford engine if the opertunity arise.

Am I right in thinking the willys engine is less prone to cracking than the Ford?
Many thanks
Byron

He is right Byron. All depends on how far you want to go and of course in the case of a GPW, it is even more difficult since the engine number is the same as the frame/data plate number. I heard that the GPW castings were a bit thinner and more prone to cracks, but I don't have any data to back that up.
Good luck with your restore.
Andy
