My slatgrill S/N 122397 with original Reg # 2049887, DOD 2-23-1942 Body#25728.
Using the calculator in the link so graciously provided, the estimated Reg # would be 2065886....15999 off.
Use the Slat grill serial number posting/sticky to estimate a registration number as well. After all these years, no one seems to have a totally accurate or documentable way of getting at an "original" registration number. The fun of picking one out and using it may generate anxiety in some observers but, hey, the discussion could be lively and part of the fun in owning a piece of history. Archeologists are an interesting , but argumentative, bunch to be around, so why can't we.
(Could use the dartboard approach too)

BTW , my Reg # remained the same through THREE layers of different OD paint. Now that is REALLY a thought-provoker.
Carefully hand sanded and photo documented. About the only thing on the sheet metal Bubba did not alter
Regards and my guess would be 2049505...got my flak jacket on over my Nomex suit and sitting back in my Gille wrap.

The hood number calculator is very inaccurate.

AAW page 253:
Using production figures and the number of jeeps in each contract and counting where your jeep fits into that contract then comparing that to the starting USA number in that contract:

You have the 22,015th MB produced.
16,000 in the first contract
2,600 in the second contract.
That accounts for 18,600 MBs

So yours is the 3,415th into the third contract.
Third contract starts with 2078697
Add 3,415 to 2078697 and you get 2082494

So...a USA of 2049505 would be available to (MB-117002) the 17,992nd MB +/-.

Those with Lloyd's book should be able to help out here.

Chuck this throws my Jeep into the twilight zone. Produced the same day less than 400 apart in S/N. Body number in reasonable
proximity to other slats produced in the February 1942 time frame I have examined. Both axels within 2 days of data plate info on brass plates. Hood is slatgrill.
I cannot verify Reg number on rear panel due to rust out. Fortunately I have enough of its service history to know it did not roll off assembly line and get shoved into a warehouse to be forgotten.
This Jeep could not have time-space-worm holed its way forward in line. (My daughter the astronomer tells me so  )
Jeep salad? Like I said, the "archeologic" evidence makes for a lot of interesting discussion. If these machines could only talk to give us the actual history.
The Reg number on mine stays the same as it served. It is the truth for this Jeep. BTHOM
I have Lloyd's books on order but cannot get to them until I am back in-country.
Highest regards to all, dumb-founded JeePa.
