1942 Ford GPW Hanger Queen

Just picked up this 1942 Ford yesterday that has sitting in a hanger for years. Its very complete, has a title and ran when parked. It was used to run ground crews around the airport and also to run aircraft in and out of hangers and has a pintle on the front bumper for that purpose. Its pretty much all original, and wont take to much to bring it back up to snuff. Its still in its 6 volt configuration. In addition the purchase included a collection of WWII weapons and memorabilia. The price was very right at $3300 for everything. I'm most thankful this Thanksgiving 😊.

What an amazing find, and an amazing price, did you hold a gun to the seller ? :lol: The windshield is post war though. If that jeep was being sold in the U.K. at that price, there would be murder with the buyers fighting over it. That jeep is as good as a lottery win.

Thanks Mark and Richard for the heads up on the Ford ID. My experience with WWII 1/4 tons is minimal. I'll check out the frame etc..was so anxious to close the deal didn't consider that it might be more than a MB. Have not had a chance to even look for any Ford Script markings ... Title lists as a 42 Willys.. frame has machine gun mount plate and is rust free, combat wheels are in great shape, I can use the windshield for my 47 CJ2A restoration project .. I'm fully into that right now, and that is the one item that I was missing on my body.

Would like to figure out what mortar this is ... I know most of the usual types ... I think its French .. Its 50mm, dtd 1940, has an adjustment ring at the base of the tube to adjust range by opening gas ports ... there was a French model produced in the 40s only and captured mortars were used by German Infantry units during the war. Any help would be appreciated ... was one of the items that came with the jeep.

After some extensive research my collection now includes a 1940, 50-PM-40 Russian 50mm mortar.
Will need to more detailed research down the road regards history, etc. Appears that this was a very popular weapon with the Germans when captured and used by both sides during the fighting in Russia. Early models were machined in Poland, and are of nicer finish and quality. This particular model is very nicely made and had to have been a WWII GI bring back.

I did get the Ford running after installing a new fuel pump, new temporary fuel lines, new 6 volt battery, oil change ( very badly needed) and toping off the radiator. The carb was not varnished or filled with nasty old fuel because who ever used the Jeep last filled the fuel tank with aviation gas. Leaded avgas does not breakdown sitting in storage, so fuel smelled and looked as good as the day it was put into the old 42.

Will these jeeps run on 100LL without having to adjust the carburetor too much and without ruining the diaphragm in the fuel pump? I suppose they should....interesting.

Michael, may have been the reason the fuel pump was shot. Pics of the frame SN and the engine SN. Would indicate a late July 1942 Built GPW .. engine is not original but was replaced late 43 or early 44. GPW head but block is not Ford.

I have started to correct the missing items ($$) on the Jeep: Blackout Lights, Blackout Drive, Correct Spare Tire Mount, Bumpers, Correct Taillights, Mirror, Correct Windshield, Correct Steering Box, Column and Wheel, Replacing Dashboard Controls, Guages and Switches, Voltage Regulator, Starter Switch, Working Wiring, Exhaust System etc. etc. etc! Will not do a restoration yet as I currently have a 47 A2 restoration with SPEN trailer in process and then I want to finish my Halftrack Preservation project. Will update progress of my corrections.

Waiting for some items to come in for the Willys so I'm working on the GPW hanger queen. Carb is rebuilt, think I may have sourced the correct year carb. Picked up a complete 43 Ford GPW engine last week to rebuild and eventually put into my jeep ...local score to include a skid plate, generator splash shield for the Ford and a couple of good brake drums that I needed for my CJ .. $400.

Tore out the Chrysler heater and some of the crap wire, old rotted battery tray, and the bubba cage being used to hold the battery when I recovered the jeep. New tray on the way. Removed the generator because the rubber mounts are just plain gone and the thing has a good inch of play. Also has the wrong adjustment bracket. Removed the cover plate over the foot starter location in the tub, so that I can reinstall the foot starter, and pulled off the two solenoids that were mounted on the firewall.

You wouldn’t mind sharing the serial number of this 1943 GPW motor you found, would you? If it’s GPW 104111 I hope we could arrange a trade. (I have to ask...you never know).
