41 slat grill questions
I just purchased a slat grill. Not very familiar with them. Have been around civilian willys for a long time.
The jeep I just bought has the data plates the serial number is 102889. So is the frame number. The gusset number is 5105 and the dod is
12-9-41. Does that seem correct. Also the motor has a cast number of 641087 I think that is incorrect the head looks like a later mb head. After talking to the owner he has owned it since 1948 or so but he never replaced the motor. Would the military have replaced it after the war. Also is there any way to track down where the jeep was sent for the war? Sorry for all the questions but any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the forum!
The 641087 block is for the CJ2A and M38, so the engine has been replaced post-war. I guess it is possible the original engine was replaced by the army with a then-brand new M38 unit before the jeep was sold on the civilian market.
Your best bet on trying to find out its history is trying to uncover any of the original markings; the registration number on both sides of the hood and possible unit markings on the bumpers. There is no list that ties frame numbers to receiving units.
I would love to see some pics!

What do the numbers on the hood and other places tell you? I'll try to figure out how to post pics never done it before

The number on the hood is the unique military registration number. Markings on bumpers were added by the unit it was assigned to.

Re: 41 slat grill questions
I have a 12-31-41 Slat that I purchased in 1958. It was purchased by a local rancher near Benicia, CA directly from the government. The slat had a April 1945 engine which probably/may have been swapped out before it was surpplused. But that is a WAG (wild ass guess). You will find great help here on this form.

Hello,
Welcome to the G503 !!!
You have a great and early jeep, made right around the Pearl Harbor attack !!!
Maybe made before the attack and dated 2 days later.
Very nice and important piece of History, please post more pictures when you get a chance
Any history on it, did it come from Utah or the neighboring states ?
You have the original paint it appears, so likely all the good stuff may be found like USA numbers and unit markings.
They could also be painted on your rear panel as well as the bumperettes if you still have them.
You can use a little razor scraper blade and chip that paint off carefully revealing the hidden historical information !
Good Luck !
Best Regards,
Ray
