Autolite Temp Gauges

Post by Michael O. » Mon Jun 19, 2017 9:21 am

Since I'm still in the process of learning more about early MB's I have a question regarding their correct temperature gauges. Did the Autolite temp gauge remain the same throughout MB production or is there are early vs. late style (as with the oil gauge, and amp gauge)? I picked up an NOS Autolite temp gauge recently and was wondering if it would be factory correct for my MB 111414? I was going to use it in my '44 MB but am thinking it might look better in my Slat.

Thanks for sharing the knowledge!

Hi Mike,

Possibly, but I am not sure, the studs on the back might be thicker like on other slat/early MB gauges.

Apart from that, I am not sure of other differences.

Regardless, nice gauge! :D

Hope this helps,
Ian.

Hi Michael
I think the early temp gauge have the big studs than the later one. Very nice gauge you find well done.

Cheers Peter

Hello Michael. Find attached photo of the Autolite Gauge that was removed from early Jeep. It seems to have thin studs.

Hope this helps

I concur....I too believe that the EARLY Autolite gauges for the slats had a larger stud on the rear but otherwise they seem to be the same. With that in mind, one with the bigger studs should command a higher price if it and a later one in similar condition were sitting side-by-side. You could probably use it in your 111xxx MB as far as I know as I don't know when the change to the later, smaller thread pitch Autolites took place.

I believe the 30/30 amp and fuel gauges gauge removed from my MB111414 had thin studs but my oil gauge had the thick studs. I assume (hopefully) that the 30/30 amp and GAS gauges were original to the vehicle and both were in excellent condition. In fact, the MB had 4 out of 5 "original" gauges...only the temp gauge was missing...which is why I'm asking about the Autolite temp gauge I recently acquired. I just wish to know what was factory correct for a Jan '42 MB. If the temp gauge is the late style, then it will go in my '44 MB.

Here are my "restored" gauges:

Marc, thanks for checking. I guess I'll still be searching for a proper temp gauge for the Slat but all is not lost as I will use my NOS gauge in my '44 MB.

Tim, the GAS and 30/30 amp gauge were just cleaned up and internally checked...they were really nice to start with. The AL Speedo and large stud Oil gauge did need a full restoration. The work was through MM.

No problem Michael, post some pictures of the restoration if you can, and good luck with the projects. :D

Good day Michael. If you have an Autolite temperature Gage with the small studs that needs rebuilding the larger studs can be installed in place of the small studs during the rebuild.

Just a thought as an NOS large stud Gage is probably going to be near impossible to find.

Roger, I'd gladly purchase a large stud AL temp gauge that's in need of a restoration. I'm still hoping Joel gets back to me with some photos.

Yes I understand your dilemma. Me thinks that finding a large stud temperature gage needing a rebuild will be hard also but who knows. Good luck with the Joel thing.

On another thought. On your existing large stud gages, what is the thread size? 12-24 or 12-32?

Thanks Roger

The only gauge in my Slat with the large studs was the Oil Pressure gauge. The GAS gauge (correct for a Slat) and 30/30 amp gauge (correct for a Slat) both have the narrower studs.

I'll try to get measurements and a photo posted tomorrow.
