Slat Grill 1941 Question

Post by Radu » Fri Feb 24, 2017 3:27 pm

Hi,

I’m Radu from Vienna, Austria and I am new to the Forum. Nice to read so much here.
I have the chance to buy a late 1941 Willys Slat Grill but my knowledge is quite new…
Can somebody tell me if this Engine is a original one or is a later one?
For the moment I not have the serial number.

Thanks for helping me
Radu

As looks go it looks like the original engine. It has the pancake air cleaner and no PCV valve which is correct. Without the engine number its hard to verify.

Inlet manifold is post-slatgrill and so is the oil dipstick (at least later than a '41).

Just a few observations...The water pump looks post war. You have the Ford style spark plug rain shields. It appears you have a CJ carburetor. Also, it looks like the head has "JEEP" cast into it? If so, you should see "WILLYS" cast on the head in the upper right corner. This would be a 1944-1945 head. Please post what the casting numbers on the block are as well as the casting date...which you'll see preceding the engine casting number. Lastly, please post the serial number on the boss behind the oil filter. This will most certainly tell us a lot about the engine.

You have the correct crossover tube and AC air cleaner. If the air cleaner is an original that's a big plus! Can you post a photo of your dash gauges?

Still...you seem to have a nice Slat Grill MB. This is definitely the place to ask questions for guidance if you wish to get everything on it factory correct. Welcome to the G.

Thanks for the answers, helps me a lot.
I’m now a little bit disappointed because the seller changes pictures. not to much original on this one...
The first one looks nice, the second looks like another jeep but same markings…
Okay then I have to wait longer... still looking for a nice slat grill in Europe.

I would like to see some more pics all-round but this example doesn't look so bad (all depending on price ofc), slatgrills aren't that common at all.

@ Rjbeamer
Not sure about the pancake, assume Original.

@ David, Michael
Perfect guessing, Engine 44/45
The problem is, too much money for jeep "salad" for me. Not want to post more pictures because the seller is nice and honest. If some want the girl, please send me a PM. She is in Europe, date December 41

I’m not complain about the money, but I’m not a restaurateur.
I not have the tools and the knowledge to restore a Jeep. Parts searching is okay…

If I find one complete and original as a wreck, this will be easier for me.
I have in Italy a really nice guy who can restore for me.
My Willys what I get in July this year is a MB 07.1942. not complete original about 60/40. Chassis, Engine, Techniques Original rest is like it is… But I have a good feeling that I get a very nice Jeep.

Just searching for a second one. Maybe a Slat Grill maybe MB, depends on Originality.

@ Andreas
Thanks, we write, if you want we can grab a Beer next week, I’m located in 16. District :)

Regards, Radu
