Yo G!
Replacing all brake components on my Slattie. Rear axles out and look superb. Drained differential and lubricant clean, gears like shiney new and no nicks or dings.
Brake drums stuck but with some effort pulled off with no major dramatics. All brake components eroded and will be replaced. Reinserted axles and gave the axles a spin with smooth performance and no grinding. All great looked clean and free of debris. Carefully pulled bearings and oils seals. Timken bearings look great and roll smoothly with no debris or grit. All sealed areas on tube are shiney, smooth and clean.
Looks as though PO did a decent job keeping things lubed.
Except for one outer edge of one of the outer bearing looking as though a small dent in it, all parts cleaned up looking fresh.
I plan to replace the dinged bearing and the oil seals along with all brake components.
Opinions appreciated. Replace all bearings?
If this were my daily driver and the brakes were the issue (instead of restoration), I would strive to get all back together in cleaned and well lubed condition with replacing the ding bearing and both oil seals.
I did not do the front axle yet.
Thanks, JeePa (aka Mobilized Medic (with a tight budget))

Re: Wheel bearings: Keep or replace?
No need to replace good parts [bearings, included] with other good parts.
Keep mated & don't mix cups & cones.
Good idea to post pictures.
Not sure what is meant by ding?
If the metal roller cage is just bent a little rebend it with pliers to where it should be.
The bearing will be good to go if it the cup & cone turns smoothly when lightly oiled & held together.
Be very careful inserting the axles so that you put them in perfectly central.
There is an oil seal inside each axle tube that can be dislodged.

Re: Wheel bearings: Keep or replace?
Thanks John!
The "ding" is a 1 mm crease on the outer edge of bearing case that would touch the axle tube wall. The bearing has been relubed and spins smoothly, the ding does NOT change the outer circumference a bit. I have the differential case opened up and no dislodging of the case bearings seen. I am amazed how clean and fresh appearing all surfaces are and how tight things feel . My Dodge M43 12 years younger was much more corroded but that truck was rode hard and put away wet many times by it's PO.
I will take extra care in getting that axles lined up as you suggest. The cover goes back on after I get the axles reinserted just to make certain.
Appreciate your wisdom and guidance.
Highest regards, JeePa

Re: Wheel bearings: Keep or replace?
Small dent on edge of cage is not critical as long as it is not contacting the rollers. If the rollers do not exhibit rust pitting, flaking, wear marks or discoloring from heat, they should be OK. Cups (races) should have none of the mentioned blems . Tapered roller bearings do not have a set lifespan as long as they are regularly serviced and kept clean and adjusted.
