Need the best AL Speedometer restorer!

Post by Michael O. » Wed Nov 23, 2016 7:46 pm

I'm looking for the best business or individual who can restore my early Autolite speedometer. I appreciate any leads!

Does the trip meter seem to rotate and work?

Yes, it does....however the #3 wheel doesn't catch the others when you rotate it so it prevents all the numbers from lining up (see photo)...but it does rotate. I'm sure this is a minor issue. There are some nice photos of restored Autolite speedometers out there...wondering who everyone uses?

I used Bob's to rebuild mine. They did excellent work. I have also used a chap in France, but he took 2 years. But both did great work.

Bobs did mine very fast and I am very happy with my Slat grill speedo.

I had good luck with Bob's many years ago, since then some guys reported less than satisfactory results causing them to send their gauges BACK once or twice so I'm not too sure you want to gamble with an Autolite Speedo. (not an AC by the way!). Finding a restorer who has some spare parts to fix the rotor that does not turn may be an issue and I'm not sure that the Motometer speedos that follwed this one have interchangable parts for that problem.

Chuck...I meant to type "AL" but I think my auto correct changed it to AC. In my post I correctly identify it as an Autolite. Yes, obviously not an AC speedo! Thanks for catching this!

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I'll post a pic of the restored speedo when I get it back.

I had mine restored through John Bizal/Midwest Military. It turned out great. The face was cleaned up and left original my choice.

Your speedo turned out well. I am having my 4 Slat gauges (missing a temp gauge) restored by the same individual who did yours. Should have them back at the end of February. I'm confident they will look as good as yours. I will post photos when I get them back. Thanks for posting!

Got the four gauges back that came with my Slat Grill MB. The Amp and Gas gauge were in excellent condition to begin with. The speedo and Oil pressure gauge needed work. In all, I think they turned out well!

I posted some "before" photos also.

That's nice. Looks like brand new gauges.

I admit that the GAS and AMPERES gauge faces were absolutely beautiful to begin with, so he left the faces alone. The speedometer and oil gauge (wide studs on the back) needed some work and they turned out beautifully.

I'm in need of two AL temperature gauges...the only two I need to complete the sets for my '42 and '44 MB's.

The turn around time for my Slat MB gauges was about 3 months.
