Axle Shaft - Bolts

Post by DavidA » Wed Dec 16, 2015 5:42 pm

I tried my darndest to find an old post here on the Slat Grill forum to see if anyone had ever talked about the bolts on the axle hub. I know the size and all and have a ton of F marked ones but my question is, what was on the head of the Slat Grill axle hub bolt? Were they plain or did they have some sort of marking?

A lot of the WILLYS axles I have seen had just good 'ol plain heads on the hub bolts but that doesn't mean they were Slat axle housings that I was looking at.

So if anyone has that info, say from an early photo or unrestored Slat, please advise. Otherwise, plain is the game for me at this point.

AH marked is the right choice

Thanks Toby,

Where did you acquire that info? Was it on a Slat that you saw or owned ? A book? Photos? Can anyone else substantiate this ?

I do have some of those but not in great quantity. They were recovered from other later axles.

I have a rear axle from a very early slat that still has the scalloped axles. All the bolts are there and are "AH" marked.

Thanks guys. I went through my stash and found 2 and installed them. Hmm…gotta do some serious trading to find the rest I guess.

By the way, today, December 17, 1941 is the birthday for my slat and today, December 17, 2015 was the re-birth day for it. I drove it for the first time. 74 years ? I have been working on it for about 2 1/2 of those years now and finally got to drive what was started out for me as a TR20 bolt and an idea that I could save a carcass of a Jeep. hahahaaah

Many thanks go to my buddies who have helped me with encouragement and their technical knowledge. Matt Parry, Mike Stopforth, Chuck Lutz, Michael France, Gary Williams, Terry O'Conner, Ernie Ongaro, Mike Decatur, Matt Beltry and most of all Paul Fitzgerald who is really really knowledgeable when it comes to the electricals and other weird stuff that I came across. Paul went out of his way many many times to help. Thanks to you all for your support.

Dave
I saw the AH marked ones on several slat grills and my MA as well. My Nov slat grill has AH bolts on the front and rear axle and was unrestored when I got it.
I have a few dozen of these in case you need some.

Do you know if AH bolts carried through to the MB or were they just plain by then?

Thanks,

A lot of the MB's that I have seen have plain bolt heads on the ends of the axles.

As for the "F'd" ones? Well everyone knows where they go.

Thanks for that David, I found plain on mine so that's one less thing to worry about.

Cheers,

DA....did you go through the two buckets of bolts behind the 20-ton press? I've been through there but never knew I was supposed to be saving AH bolts for you. Might be worth the effort for us to dump them out and check for them....one...more...time?
