Advice and cost on Slat body restauration

Post by glider » Mon Mar 10, 2014 6:37 am

Hello everyone,

I undertake to restore my body + fenders of my Willys MB Script.

I post about it to know your opinion on the body, and your estimated cost of the work (I'm French but I an estimate).

The repairs needed are (from what I could see) :
- Fuel tank box replacement
- reinforcement front junction driver side
- addition of a carrier panel L rear ( near tailight )
- triangles of reinforcement next toolbox cover
- Replace half of rear floor ( behind casing head )
- ply of sheets passenger side to the level of " doors "

I found very few points of rust , metal is healthy on the panels and sides. See photos below .

Thank you for your help.

It is hard to come up with a price by the photos you posted, it looks to me the entire tub may have a coating of body filler on it & the areas you have not uncovered could be hiding anything, what I would suggest is to have the tub sandblasted by someone who know what he is doing as the metal is easily warped, even more so in this case as the filler will be hard to shift.

Given you are in France I would ask around some of the French members of G503 and see who does their metal work.

Thank you John for your advice,

I think the front floor (as the part Midwest military or Peter Debela sale) has been changed.

Yes I search some adresses in France !

Thank you very much,
Fred

In my humble opinion, you will never be able to avoid some bondo (bog) unless new panels are made. You will always need filler if you are going for straight and perfect panels of original body. Bondo is pretty much unavoidable unless you are an amazing "Metal Man".

Correct me if I am wrong here gang... :(

David,

You are not wrong a good metal guy can straighten that but it is going to take a lot of work and all these hours end up costing bib $, there is a place in the UK now making perfect script Willys back panels and that may be the way to go here.

David, John,

Yes I understand the Rear Panel is healthy but bumpy.

But I wish keep the panel on my slat.

At the moment I have a budget of €2500, do you think is a feasible ?

Without knowing labor costs for a tradesman who can do this sort of work I can say out here a budget like that would have you tub sorted provided there is no rust, as David said, may be a little tricky to avoid some filler in the rear panel though.

Hi John,
Can you tell me who is making these rear panels?
Thanks,
Andy

Andy,

The panels are mentioned & pictured on page 4-5 of this thread, seen them myself on the UK auctions site as well, they look good.

Wow! Thanks John. Hope he sells in the US soon. I need that back panel ... maybe I can get a friend in the UK to ship it to me.
