Hello,

I recommend asking Ron first.

Restoration specialities and supply company has them and lots of other useful bits for vintage car restoration at fair prices.
They are located on the east coast.

Recommend downloading their catalog and look through it.

WANTED EARLY WINDSHIELD push button studs

Post by Rick Daniel » Sat Sep 21, 2013 6:45 am

Charles,

The "Gustine Boy's" took a day trip up to Tower Park yesterday to do some window shopping and look for a small but expensive list of parts needed to put Dieter's 1952 M38A1 A.K.A: "WOLFEVAGEN" back on the road. For reasons unknown, M38A1 parts were extremely sparse and at the end of the day had not found one item on our list.

Now back on topic, as you know I am restoring MB I02891 with a D.O.D of 12-08-41. She had the correct "LOW WINDSHIELD" still on her when I brought her home. Sadly enough she had no Windshield Studs. Like you, I am on the hunt and having absolutely no luck in finding even ONE let alone the TEN needed. I have talked to Ron, Mike, Brent, Pete and many others and every time have struck out.

Yesterday I stopped by Mike's and asked again if he had found any of the Early Studs and got the all to familiar answer of "Sorry I don't have any and honestly don't know where you are going to find them".. Mike shared a story about a guy who used to have them in bag's of 100 he sold for $40.00 per bag. Mike said he last saw the guy several years ago.

Don and I moved on and ended up at Scott's site and in a small clear plastic box were TEN of the early studs. The price was $100.00 and not negotiable. I looked at them closely and found they still had traces of Cosmoline on them. I happily gave up one of my crisp Franklin's and put them in my pocket. I asked Scott if he had any more and he told me he had one more set and they were for his GPW and not for sale. If I had found another set they would have your name on them. I will keep looking and hope for the best.

Hi guys,

I hate to be a pessimist, but can anyone ACTUALLY post a current manufacturer's part number or direct link to the studs from a website? I too have been looking for these and the only information offered in these posts is "try this place" or "this place has them". But I have yet to see anyone post definitive information on obtaining them. And I have been to Mac's, Restoration Specialty, and any other site claimed to have them- without any luck. Sure they all have a myriad of studs, but not what we're in search of.

And Joel, you're the only one I've seen on these boards claiming to have actually purchased these new, and from a specific manufacturer. Might you have the information to order them still handy? How long ago did you buy them and how much were they?

Thanks,
Chris

Am afraid that I haven't got much to tell.
I bought the GI Issue pushbutton ones to install on my windshield about 20 years ago from Surplus City. Prior to that I used the A-4120 fastener that I also bought from Surplus City. Time has taken a toll on Fasteners, Surplus Citys' roots go back to the 40's-50's when they were a manufacturer of canvas products for the military. Time has taken a toll on the original hardware used for canvas and it is harder to find. Much of what was used for WWII canvas was available in quantity as Gov't surplus for years but has been used up since. I used to wholesale fasteners to some of the dealers 30 years ago, and it is gone now. I had approximately 12,000 doorway fasteners for the half doors, they were wholesaled and sold out years ago as well as various DOT fasteners, grommets and studs. Much of my stock came from Ft Devens, and the USAF Bases at Dow Field and Presque Isle. Years ago, before jets, the USAF had Canvas Shops at every base that repaired the fabric control surfaces on aircraft as well as the various covers used to protect aircraft and ground equipment. They had just about every fastener used for canvas in stock. My fasteners are all gone except for the ball tips I occasionally order from a Gov't Contractor. Finding obsolete WWII fasteners is difficult as the current canvas dealers have scoured the country including the gov't contractors. At one time as I understand it, Friday Canvas had the largest stock of original fasteners for WWII canvas.

I checked the website Hinrik suggested and found two items that appear to be the A2994 Early Windshield Stud everyone
with an early Slat Grill is searching for.

I think it was on page 173 and the item numbers were #63313 which has a #10 Metal Screw that is 5/8 inch long and #63314 which has a #8 Metal Screw. #63313 is listed at $3.50 each and #63314 is listed at $3.75 each.

I did some precise measuring on one of the ten I got and the threads are 5/8 inch long which would lead me towards #63313 over the #63314. The catalog does not mention the finish of the metal but paint is cheap.. I am going to call tomorrow and ask about the finish and if it is possible to send me a photo of the two items. If necessary I will order one of each and then compare to the original I have.

I will keep you informed of my progress.

Sounds good if you are willing to order these and see if similar. If not black, I recommend "cold gun blueing" the top to get
the right color instead of paint.

Chris,

Did you ask them if they had part number: 63333 in stock? This is a few years old download I have of their catalog.

EARLY WINDSHIELD push button studs

Post by Rick Daniel » Mon Sep 23, 2013 8:44 am

I called this morning and spoke with Barb in regards to the windshield studs and she confirmed they have both
items in stock. Confirmed the finish is shiny Nickle over Brass which we will have to correct.

I have one 63313 and one 63314 along with a copy of their current catalog enroute via Priority Mail and I should have
in my Mail Box by the end of the week. I will keep you informed of my progress..

James....can you comment on the ones from Sweden?

If you have an original to compare these to.....
1) Same length screw threads, same diameter?
2) Same size "hex" ?
3) Same height from hex to spring fitting?
4) Blackened BRASS exterior and STEEL threads?

Hi Chuck

From your description, (Blackened brass exterior, steel threads), it looks like the ones I had on the windscreen when I bought the jeep are not original. Underneath the paint they have the same shiny steel finish that the new ones have. They look so similar they could even be from the same source. I have taken some measurements as follows:

Hex size 1/2 inch
Screw length 0.6 inch
Screw diameter 0.197 inch
Hex depth 0.2 inch
Top of hex to top of capstan 0.25 inch
Top of hex to top of button 0.4 inch

Hope this helps

James
