New Slatgrill Owner!
I just became the new owner of a November(?) '41 MB, ser. no. 100161. It needs a lot of work, but I think it's a saver. First order of business is cleanup; I've already washed about 3" of dirt, corn leaves, old seat cover remnants, and other trash out of it. Next is to undo a lot of Bubba handiwork. I'm sure you'd all like to see some pictures, and I took a bunch, but I can't find the cord for my camera. I'll get some pictures up as soon as I can. Another project/adventure begins! (as if I needed another one!) BW

I found the cord! Now I guess I've got to open a Photbucket or some such account, post them there, then rig it so they can be seen from here. Right? BW

Re: New Slatgrill Owner!
Thanks Dexter! I'll get you some more as soon as I can.
A few things I've found so far:
No dash tags, the frame tag is intact and matches the title.
Engine appears to be a CJ, the head is ribbed and the engine is stuck. Pancake air cleaner is gone.
Rear end appears to be CJ, no floating axle hubs.
The top is off of the transmission and the case is clear full of dirt.
Front bumper and rear crossmember have been replaced with channel iron, and a Bubba-made winch and hitch installed.
A CJ gas tank was sitting on a plate welded over the fuel tank sump. At some point, Bubba moved the filler on the CJ tank to the top, "repaired" the hole he had cut in the side of the body, and enlarged the hole in the seat because he didn't get the filler in the right location.
Passenger seat is gone, a wooden box resembling CJ's tool box was built, with its own seat cushion and backrest.
All the floors and hat channels are as good as gone.
But;
The rear panel looks pretty good, and the original tire carrier is there, moved to the middle.
Steering wheel is in pretty good shape. The steering gear works.
Windsheild frame, inner and outer, both look pretty good, with only two holes in the skin.
There are two combat wheels and one solid disc on it.
The body is fairly straight and doesn't show a LOT of rust above the floor.
The front channel iron bumper is welded to the remains of the gussets, not to the frame.
Not more than a few extra holes in the dash, and no radio, speaker, or tachometer holes.
The slat grill has a few bent slats, but they are all there, as are the headlights.
I'm sure I'll find more bad, hopefully I'll find more good too, as I go along. This project will have to wait a while, since I have two CJ's and a GPW ahead of it in line, as well as my '70 Chevy pickup and an '80 X11. But at least it has another chance at life, instead of going to the shredder. BW

Not too bad! I'm glad a Jeep guy is saving it from death! A worthy project. Now if only you could find all the parts in the scrappers pile! John

Re: New Slatgrill Owner!
Thanks Dexter, for posting those for me.
The first picture shows the well-used slat grill and Bubba's home-made winch. Pretty ingenious, actually. The corn leaves are an indication of what was in EVERY nook and cranny in the jeep. The tool box lids were held shut with sheet-metal screws and were un-openable anyway because of the roll bar, and there were corn leaves in them. The roll bar is gone now - a concession, or should I say, a sacrifice to the scrap iron god. That's where the front bumper and winch, as well as the rear bumper and hitch will go.
The lock-out hubs are of a type that I've not seen before, and the wheels wouldn't come off over them. I had to take the lockouts off to get the wheels off. The solid disc wheel on the left front looks very good with the tire off of it. The left rear tire was still holding air and the right rear held after I changed the valve core. With all the tires up and the roll bar gone, the jeep looks a LOT better already. The combat wheel on the right front looks good, but I haven't split it or removed the tire yet, I'm letting the nuts soak. The other combat wheel, on the spare carrier, has some wear in the lug holes. More on them when I get them apart.
I haven't yet determined how many extra holes are in the dash, but i think the number is considerable. at least there are no BIG ones. The topless T-84 is visible, with some of the dirt and corn leaves washed out of it. The cover/lever was laying loose in the jeep and everything is rusted tight. I think maybe something went wrong with the transmission, Bubba took the top off to see what, and it's never been driven since. The last Colorado license plates on it expired 31 December 1972. The title is still in the seller's dad's name, and Dad died in 1973. The steering wheel looks surprisingly good.
More pictures will come, if Dexter doesn't mind helping me out. If anyone sees something that should be pointed out to me, don't be bashful - speak up! BW
