WTS: Early Slat Grill K1 Carter Carburetor Kit

Post by Peewee » Tue Aug 28, 2012 1:01 am

As posted here: http://www.g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=209387
But I think here is the more correct forum.

K1 539-S Carter carburetor "downgrade" kits where not available until now.
I had made some kits to downgrade your 539-S Carter carbutretor, to early K1 factory specifications.

Most of these carburetors where bring to later specifictions during service.

See Info below:
For bigger fotos look here: http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/showgal ... p?cat=3319

Here is a picture from John Farleys great book The Standardised War-Time Jeep 2 that can
purchased here: http://johnfarleyjeepbooks.com

Site 216, December 1941 Willys Engine, here you can clearly spot the early 539-S K1 Carter carburetor.

This is what you need and get, to birng your 539-S Carter carburetor to K1 specification

1 x 62-131S tube clamp assembly (early production) "new manufactured, correct circled C stamped, plated"
1 x 3-463S Throttle shaft and lever assembly (early production), "reworked" 3-465S Throttle schaft and lever assembly
incl. a correct early 101-121 Throttle lever adjustment screw"
1 x 2-89 NOS original Throttle valve
2 x 39-11 chocke valve attaching screw
1 x 105-11 Tube clamp screw "replacemant for the longer 105-13 screw, as the 62-134 tube clamp need to be removed!
1 x 105A-8 Tube clamp nut
1 x Correct stamped 539-S K1 brass tag
If needed I can support a NOS 1A-55S flagne gasket and diffuser assembly

Sven....isn't the 1A-55S flange gasket and diffuser assembly the one that goes between the carb and the intake manifold?
Nabholtz lists the introduction of the DIFFUSER on the flange gasket as:
AUGUST 1942 at MB 179307

So prior to that date, jeeps did not have a flange gasket with the built in diffuser.....I wonder if those gaskets are available without that feature?

PS....really nice set up you devloped there for the really anal-retentive Slat owner....you even include the brass tag with the CORRECT "K1" stamp on it!

Good job!

Chuck, really good hint on that, I´d never noticed that before. Learning every day!

I have brwosed through my NOS carb rebuild kits and gasket sets.
In all I only found the flange gasket with diffusor.

But in the gasket kit for the 572-S Willys Motor generator carburetor I was surprised what I found.
The 572-S had the 427 stamped bases with the samller diameter for generator operation.

What me really surprised was the F mark:

The diameter of the gaskets are the same as flange gaskets whith diffusor for the 539-S carburetors.
I´m curious if the two 1 A56 gaskets where fitted on slat grill Jeep too.
I don´t have try it, but it seems to be easy to delete the metal diffusor form a NOS original flange gasket, to get the early style. They are simpy held together with staples.

In the kits for the later postwar carburetors I found these gaskets:

They are made from the same "graphit material" as the two 1A-56 gaskets avove.

I have one flange gasket that is the standard FOUR sheets of material held together on the side with ONE staple that is probably a modern gasket but it has round holes for the manifold studs and the opening is the correct diameter for the jeep, not for the generator with the carb having the smaller manifold opening. I have enclosed TWO pics of the gasket with the diffuser on it....

The first one is what is sold these days and the two copper sleeves on the stud holes do not compress and air leaks in making the motor want the CHOKE pulled out all the way to run:

Here is a photo of what might be an NOS Flange Gasket with the diffuser on it but note that there are NO sleeves on the manifold mounting holes! This one should work fine and not leak air:

Here is a pic of one identified as for the M38 and it does not have the sleeves in it...

The gaskets in Carter Generator envelope had the same diamater as my NOS Gaskets with diffusor, that you showing above too.
So it will perfect work with a 539-S carburetor.
The gasket in the middle is standard FOUR sheets material too, but it is hold together with two staples.
The F marks suprised me, as Ford did not produce Generators, so I´m not sure if these gaskets are original to that envelope.

Did early Jeep use the same setup as mentioned on the envolve footnote, two of the thinner graphit coatet gaskets and between the FOUR sheets
gasket, on top the carburetor? Or was the carburetor mounted to the manifold only with the FOUR sheet (less diffusor) gasket?

Peewee....the "121-56" gaskets (2) go on either side of the ISOLATOR "183-19" which is between the BOWL and the FLANGE BODY....not below the FLANGE BODY where the intake manifold gasket is located....so to answer your question...both the K1 and later 539S Carters used those two gaskets. I would mention that later on the shape of the Isolator #183-19 changed.....

Ahh, now. Sorry I mixed up the gaskets and numbers.

So what do you think will be the correct gasket for the early carburetors

The standard FOUR sheets material gasket without the diffusor (middle one), or one of the thin ohne sheet
"graphit" coated gaskets as shown left and right in the picture?

There seems to be a variation in the hand throttle cable routing for the Carter 539S-K1 on the early slat grille MB. The images in this forum and the drawing in the TM suggest the cable routing under the cross tube, with a tight bend down to the outer cable clamp on the carburettor flange. A picture exists in MB Description & Characteristics of a very early MB with a cable routing over the cross tube: Anyone have a view on what was factory correct?
