Is it feasible to remove and replace two head bolt

Postby Jim Gordon » Mon May 14, 2012 9:16 pm

Motor (MB 41 slat with a 45 engine) was professionally rebuilt and the head was bolted down (no studs were used) I provided the bracket for the oil filter but forgot about the air cleaner cross over to the carburetor. Question is it advisable or feasible to remove just two of the bolts, install the cross over support bracket and replace the two bolts. This easy fix approach seems to scream disaster over and over. What say ye!!!!!! Is it a reasonable risk or extremely hazardous. Jim

No problems to remove the bolts and put the cross over tube.
It is better to replace the bolts with studs as the original design is.
You can screw the stud (with sealant on the thread) in the block with a double nut.
Before removing the bolts drain the coolant below deck surface.
Torque the nuts/bolts to specification with a torque wrench.

Good luck,
Gindi.

I agree with Gindi, but would advise sealant on the threads of the studs, then don't be tempted to overtighten these studs using the double nuts [just over finger tight with all threads right level with the block].

Thanks for the rapid response. Question are the correct studs something I can pickup when in town or is it a special order item? J.
