Hi
Research the true color to paint my slat,
I did not find the topic above. :|
I think matte painting,
the correct number of OD painting, to order.
my slat is January 16, 1942.

Thanks

Hi,

I have a Feb 11 1942 slat grill and I have chosen (what I think to be correct) lustreless Olive Drab #319. I had some new old stock rear lamps still in their protective coating (cosmoline?) so I got a local automotive paint supplier to analyse it and mix it up for me, after a few test sprays and re-mixes I finally found the colour and shade I was happy with.

This is an interesting read http://wwiijeepparts.com/Archives/WWIIJ ... DJeepPaint
I think a few folks make the mistake of taking the word 'lustreless' to the extreme and get their paint mixed up dead flat (matte?), if you look at some historical photos of new Jeeps they in fact have a slight sheen to the paint.

Of course this is totally up to the restorer, if your don't intend on building a factory fresh Jeep then flat would probably be more appropriate, the original paint finish would have oxidized and faded rather quickly in service.

This is an early '42 MB, note the slight reflection on the dishes of the wheels, this would be a new Jeep of course for this promotional photo.

I've heard many great comments about these guys http://www.tm9ordnance.com/products.asp#, looks like a top quality product and they'll also send you sample plates.

At the end of the day, the colour and shade is totally up to, you have to be happy with it, correct or not.
Next time you go to a military vehicle event or show, take note, they're all different!

That wouldn't be the original paint job. You can see that it has the English "Mickey Mouse"camouflage pattern paint on it. The wheels appear to be painted in the darker of the two colours.

thank you for the answers.
I think I'll take the 319.
Slat is for my grill and my GP Ford,
I hope to find here in Canada.
provided it does well for the color,
for the first jeep production.

thanks

Hi Michel,
I have seen on this forum where several folks have found black primer under the body paint and frame paint on their slat jeeps.

Regards, Jeff

I used a red primer underneath with Aervoe Paint 34087 :D
Hope this helps. I actually prefer Aervoe paint above all others. 8)

Hi
I check here in Canada,

33070 early OD.

is that it's okay for slat 42 or Ford GP 41

Michel;

I used 33070 for my '42 GPW. I recently disassembled the steering on my Dec. '41 Slat Grill. On the steering shaft itself (not tube, but inner shaft) was beautifully preserved original paint. Did you check there for a paint color? Comparing it to the 33070, it is a much darker and "greener" color, the 33070 is much more "olive".

I believe 33070 is generally more acceptable for early production models, at least for Fords, I don't think it matches well for the color I found on this slat.

And from what I've read also, 319 is considered to be an even later paint color than 33070.

I too am looking for the right color and AVG may have the answer.

I also had black primer on the frame and under the hood. It did not bond well and the paint that peeled off was again that darker green.

Phil

Hi
here in Quebec I may have just the color 33070
if I order the color in a paint specialist,
what code I must give to him for 319 color ?

I think the 319 is the best for slat.
