Slat Engine Features

Post by ajlang » Tue Feb 21, 2012 8:28 am

I have a couple of questions about this early engine photo:

Image

If you notice the line from the oil filter to the fitting besides the fuel pump is braided metal. When was this replaced by the standard rubberized oil lines and were both lines braided metal on the early engines?
The other question is the rear valve cover bolt. It has a post that sticks out about an inch or so beyond the bolt "head". What was this for? Toby Wacker showed me a repro he had made of this bolt and it has two holes drilled in that post that sticks out. When did this go away and replaced by the standard bolt.
Thanks,
Andy

Can anybody tell me if the short (oil filter to timing cover) oil line was also metal braided as the long one shown in the picture?
Thanks,
Andy

If you look at both oil lines long and short in the photo you can see the stark difference between the two, follow the long line along it's entire length in the shadow and light.
The appearance is the same so I think the long hose is metal braid. This has been seen in other period photos as well.

Guys may i jump on this thread also....and ask a couple of questions

1/ The steering box....?....Should it not be a ROSS marked cover ?

2 / What are the 2 metal ? bands on the steering column ?

Regards

Hello Lloyd,
The lower band secures the steering column tube to the box, the top band is a spring clip that covers the slot that is found on 1st contract GPWs and all MBs as I understand. As for the steering box markings this being a production line photo then it is what it should be :)
cheers

The long oil line on my 41 Willys was braided and failed this year. I always assumed that it was a replacement. However that line has been in use I know for the past 29-30 years, and that does not sound feasible. Is this "normal"?
