Thanks Charlie however I am still not sure which of the holes toward the front of the floor had the bolt that holds the strap. My new floor had the rear bracket U thing with the 5/16 nut but the front one is still pretty much a mystery to me. I get the impression that it mounts to the front hat channel but just exactly where I am not sure. I am thinking it is drilled through the floor and the hat channel at about the spot where your photo is cut off but I might be wrong.

I have mounted my muffler to a bracket that I welded on the hat channel until I get a picture of the actual way it goes and then I will make the necessary changes. :?

Charley: Thanks! Those last photos are perfect and almost tell the story. Only thing missing is some sort of dimension references. I can see the locale but how far from what is the question. Those are good pics though. :D

Hi David.
I´m very happy to know that my photos can help.
My Jeep is in the farm and I can obtain the distances that you need, but not now. Sorry
As soon I travel, I will obtain the measurements.
Cheers.

Charlie...

I've been assembling the components to put a proper round muffler on my 4/42 GPW and have quite a problem since even the early GPW manuals and the SNL photos show an early "slat grill" (ACM I) style FRONT mounting. In reality, a Ford tub has the "U" brackets welded to the FLOOR of the tub both front and rear so you can't use the manual photos to gather parts.

Basically I just picked up the same mounting set up for the FRONT as the REAR of the muffler has and the parts are painted and sitting in the sun drying as we speak (no...no paint on the muffler).

But...with the front carriage bolt on the ACM I set up, it being 1 3/4" long....it appears that you insert the carriage bolt through the floor. install the rubber insulator, place a muffler support plate on and install a lockwasher and hex nut.

That puts the rubber insulator right against the hat channel. I can't see how you mounted the rubber insulator to the carriage bolt but it does not appear that it is up against the hat channel...you have an additional SCREW through the insulator which is not listed in any of the photos/parts lists I can find for a set up that uses the carriage bolt.

PS...on the REAR mount...the small edge on the plate goes over the edge of the rubber insulator.

PPS...I see you have opted to use either some conveyor belt or something like tire sidewall for the two rubber insulators. The kits that were around with the RED rubber and no internal nylon cords are good for one season or so then they dry up from the heat, crack and fall apart. Junk....not worth installing. Use 'em as a template and then toss 'em.

Greeting to all. Does anyone have instructions on how to mount the round muffler on a Slat Grill? The post on the 1941 MB site is gone. My serial number is 104407. DOD: 18 Dec. 1941. I think I see where the brackets mount into threaded weld nuts on the passenger side underside of the tub. How does the muffler tube get routed from the manifold back to the rear of the tub? My Jeep is a Willys. Any photos or information would be appreciated. Hope everyone is doing well. Thank you!

Hello!
Does anyone have information on how to place the front bracket to mount the round muffler? I have the rear mount with the weld nut in it. I do not have the original front hole. That hole was lost when that part of the floor had been replaced because of rust. I obtained the Jeep from a person here in Tucson who had done some restoration on it.

I would appreciate any help.
Thank you,
Michael :D
