Restoration Slat #111237

Postby Robinv » Mon Oct 31, 2011 8:15 am

Hi People of G ,

I decided to put up a topic about my restoration project.

Here is how it started :

Around May 2011 a friend linked me a jeep in the USA , sold by Midwest Military in Minnesota. Since i live in Belgium , we have a huge difference between Euro and Dollars so the price was in my favour. Judged by the pictures , i knew it will be a big project but i'm not scared of it. So without too many doubts, i decided to buy the jeep and so did... 5-6 months later it was October 2011 when the jeep arrived in Rotterdam and was transported to the company i contacted to have it shipped. ASAP we went to pick it up at their office.

When i first saw it , i was surprised because the metalwork looked much better than in the pictures at first, so i was getting more confidencd that this was worth every penny. Soon as we took it from the trailer , we worked on the brakes because the axles wouldnt roll...after a few hours of work we placed 4 wheels on the jeep so we could roll it around, the steering box is broke or something is loose...so it does not steer at this moment.

Information i would like to share :

Jeep Willys ( Slat Grill ) serial # 111237
Hood number : 2043636
Tub number : 14261
Engine : Ford GPW

So up till now ive been dismantling the jeep as good as possible , i bought some TM's and correct material such as US wrenches to work with.

ALL comments are welcome , good and bad.
These days im preparing everything to take the tub off , the only thing that blocks me is my steering wheel, it's stuck ( rusted ).
So i have to see how i will fix that properly... I'll post new pics once i have some interesting to share.

By the way , if you want to see certain details , please ask! It's no problem to take extra pictures.

Some images of my engine and parts of it , if anyone could date my engine it would be welcome...I'm anxious to know if this came originally with the jeep or not , not sure if i can show enough information of it though.

There is a lot of work there but you have most of the hard to find bits & it is a really worthwhile project, as you are in Belgium & when ready to start restoration I would suggest you track down William & invite him around.......often.

Good luck with your Jeep.

While removing my gauges from the dashboard a problem occured... The oil gauge is fastened to its bracket with 2 nuts but when i try to remove them my bolts turn also... How can i fix this without damaging anything ?

The 4 other gauges went out perfectly, wich amazed me.

The block has a casting of "F22522" on it which should translate to:
F = June
22 = June 22nd
5 = June 22, 1945
The other "22" probably being a mold or other in-house identifier...

So the block was CAST on June 6, 1945 and compleated sometime after that.

Looks like it had some interesting usage over the years. The pic below the aircleaner pic is really interesting, to me at least. It's really cool to see a radio mounted behind the seat like that. My 37 Dodge sedan had the same radio in it. What are you going to do with it?

I took it out and put in in a box but the bottom of the radio or speaker or whatever it is , is totally rotten away. Even some parts of the side are rotten.
Too bad actually...i kinda liked it.

It's a shame to see something like that having been just left to rot away over the years. It happens, I know, but it still makes me very sad.

Somehow a big update for me to share, i took the tub off today and it doesnt look any worser than i could have expected so thats a plus.
Stripping will go easier from this point on.

Not the best pictures due to limited space but just to give you an idea :

Great project Robinv!! Looks like your Slat went through a possible stateside rebuild. It has a late unstamped GPW engine along with other GPW components. It is good to see a jeep which was on its way down and out being saved!! Good Luck with it! Jon S.
