My 1942 Willys Slat Grill BODY TUB NUMBER FOUND!

Post by 1945Willys6202 » Wed Sep 21, 2011 5:07 pm

Hey guys! I bought this Jeep from Terry O' Connor at CMA, and it is great. He repaired some holes in the body, sanded it, and gave it a fresh new paint job for me! I just picked it up today, so I wanted to know what you guys think of it. I have an original Slat Grill coming for it soon also, so that will be awesome to put on it. Thanks

Great Slat from the pics! We could give you a better idea of what exactly you have if you could post pics of the gauges and of the engine compartment. Nice grab!

Thank you very much!
As of now, I don't have any pictures of the tags, because when I got it, it had GPW data tags on it, so they were of no use to me. The serial number I went with was 102833, because this is a december slat grill.

By the body, which has no glove box, I knew that it was a 1941. By the frame, we could tell that it was a late 1941. I will have to get the body number, so that maybe I can figure more out.

...if you go by the combat wheels, it would be at least a 42, If you go by the counterbalanced needle on the speedometer, it would be a 44 or 45, if you go by the windshield, it could be a 41 but not #2833, if you go by the pintle hook, you have a M151, if you go by the left front spring, it would be a GPW, if you go by the steering wheel it would be a late war model and if you go by the missing notch on the cowl seam near the E brake, you have a Oct 41  or an M201 (also  ) . If the gusset is original to the tub you can at least date the tub - if the frame has no tag, the guesswork begins but can be narrowed down by features. I don't want to badmouth your Jeep - just pointing out a few NOT 41MB things. Either way, this looks like a very good starting point.

Just for info, it would be interesting to understand what tub you have as all slats with the exception of slat #1 (100001) had the notch above the parking brake handle on the dash panel. I have slat number 18 (100018) with the original tub and it has the notch. Photographs exist of slat #1 without the notch, hence it's believed that is the only tub that does not have a notch.

Any other info out there on this particular feature of the slat tubs?

Chris,
Look at John Farleys book: "The standardized War time Jeep"
I sent you an email with the picture - don't want to post it in public b/c of copyright

As Tony mentioned, the M201 did not have this feature either!

The tool box lids in the picture have the single hinge - Nov and Dec slat grills had the double hinged lids

I cant have very good definition on my computer as I can't make out a notch or not in the cowl! I did spot the screw heads on the hood side for the greasegun which didnt come in until 44.
I thnk your best bet is to check what you have on your Jeep against the sticky list of slat grill differences, here on the slat grill forum, so you can start to see exactly what you do have.
Even if its not a 41, or predominently not a slat grill, it still looks a decent Jeep.
