Bottom A arm cracks

Post by Ozhumvee » Tue Apr 03, 2007 2:13 am

Has anyone had problems with the bottom A rm cracking?
I was replacing my rear springs and when I dropped the coil out there was a crack running halfway around the inner wall where the shock comes up through.
There was another crack right where the end of the coil sits on the top surface about 1 1/2 " long as well.
I've yet to pull the other side off so will inspect it closely as well.

Peter,

I think if you search the archives of the HML you will find that this is a known issue on civvy trucks.
Particularly ones that are heavily loaded or heavily off roaded.

I haven't chcked my rears, but I did thoroughly check the fronts for cracks when I did my spring change a couple of weeks ago with no sign of cracks.

Cheers

I've now pulled the LHS off and it is ok no sign of cracks, both springs have the same free height too.
Does anyone know why AM General has such a small head on the shock bolts, it isn't as if there isn't enough room!
A normal hex head would make them much easier to hold when undoing the nut.

I've some civilian models have regular hex head grade 5 bolts 1" by 1.13 as the upper shock pins. Lower use special pin for control arm clearance.

Probably a good idea to swap the top ones at least, I did realise the bottom ones had to be that way due to clearance issues in the A arm.

You beat me to it Mark.
It's required for clearance to the lower control arm in the lower mount "hole" and AMG would only want to carry one part on the line.
