WTK: Front A-arm bolt removal Question.

Post by beltfed34 » Mon Feb 05, 2007 2:05 pm

All, I need to yank out the bolt holding the lower A-arm to the frame bracket, to install the front winch frame extension support bracket. Of course, the nut-side of the bolt is on the wrong side so I will have to completely remove the bolt to install the support bar on both sides. Question, what's the best way to do this, is this under pressure? from the coil spring, should I jack it up? Doesnt look like fun.

Ok, thought a pic might be better to describe the bolt that I need to remove. See below:

I haven't had to do anything to my front A-arms yet, but I did replace my lower rear A-arms as part of my shelter carrier conversion. I think you'll need to get rid of the spring pressure before you can (safely) remove that bolt.

Austin,
From memory when I did mine years ago, jack it up enough to relieve the weight, don't get the tire completely free of the ground. Here's the trick, get yourself 2 bolts, same diameter but about an inch longer. You will use the new bolts to drive the existing bolts out. This will keep you control arm aligned and attached.
Loosen the nut, but don't remove it. Use a plastic dead blow hammer to hit the nut to loosen the bolt. When the bolt is loose, remove the nut and use one of the new bolts to drive out the existing bolt. Drive the new bolt all the way thru, keeping it in contact with the existing bolt. When your bracket is in place, use the original bolts to push the new bolts back out, reinstall the nut, grab a beer!

I did kinda like D Pizzoferrato said except I drove my new bolt in { with anti seize on it } and left the head facing aft to better access the bracket later if need be.
