Air filter housing

Post by Ted Gates » Tue Aug 15, 2006 10:22 am

Hi Everyone,

I have been going through my humvees and noticed something that might help you prior to fording water...There is a cleanout trap on the bottom of the air filter housing and on one of my rigs the entire metal piece fell right when I tried to remove the rubber cap (no I did not pry on it!). On the other rig, there wasn't even a rubber cap (great mouse access). I hope this helps.

Ted

PS. Perhaps Brad has a picture to post?!

air filter caps

Post by Kurt Lesser » Tue Aug 15, 2006 3:30 pm

Part number 28 is a flat round cap in the HMMWVs with the fording kits on them and something that looks like a duckbill on vehicles with the regular "mushroom" air intake.

The idea is that all the air is drawn into the snorkle for fording but that any water that gets into the regular intake is drained out the bottom before it gets into the filter housing itself. It's most noticable when the vampire strikes and ATF drips down the firewall.

Brad and Kurt,

Great information especially on the two types of rubber caps used, but I was trying to explain the part of the housing that 28 is connected to (you can see part of it above the hose clamp). It is "permanently" connected to the main housing and on one of my rigs, and it just fell right off. Bad production run? Anyway, have a look at yours and make sure you do not lose it on the road/trail.

Thanks for the additional information!

Ted

air filter drain port

Gotcha Ted,

I had this all apart when I did the rebuild on my vehicle. That's when I found out there were 2 different caps. I agree that this would be a bad piece to lose for a bunch of reasons.
