Questions about getting a street legal title in S.C.
Gentlemen, I am new to all of this and am spending as much time as I can in preparation of receiving my 2 door soft top from Govplanet. I have done all the paperwork and paid for the truck, and just received an invoice for a complete title. (I think it will be an off road title from Montana ?). I eventually want to put my M1025 metal parts on the two door soft top, but am concerned about the fact that the title may indicate a 2 door soft top, and I want to title it as a 4 door hard top. My question is---should I go ahead and get the title from Montana, or work with that SF67(?) paper? Does anyone here have any experience doing this in South Carolina?

Sounds like you should have done more research before you bought it???

I don't know exactly what your title will show for the vehicle type. Might list it as a truck. Your state will make the decision as to what type of vehicle it is. In California, they want to charge for the higher commercial plates if it has an open bed, even a soft top covering the bed or even a fiberglass cap is not good enough, but a slantback setup installed is permanent enough looking to qualify it as a utility and the lesser cost of a non commercial vehicle license plate. I think doing the conversion first is best.

I have built three complete cars from scratch and the Highway Patrol eventually gave all three a VIN number, and I guess my more appropriate question was weather to try it without any title or use the Govplanet Minnesota title, and try to get it converted.

I believe both the title and the sf97 will have the off road only stamp.

Many states will require you to have the rig weighed, examined by CHP for VIN or to assign a VIN, seat belts and a brake and lamp certificate of which reverse lights will be required for on road use. Also, at the DMV, they will inspect all of your paper work and lastly check for matching VIN and emission label decals on the engine driver side valve cover. Of these all, by far the hardest thing to get and find if you don't have it is the emission decal sticker. I was lucky enough to source the last ones and bought them all. If you guys need one, please email me or text me.

South Carolina does not require an emissions test or sticker, etc.
