6.5l head gasket -34 manual pages needed

Postby nickd » Tue May 01, 2012 1:33 am

It was necessarry to remove the heads on the 6.5l rebuild I recently installed after 500 miles due to bubbles of oil appearing on the seam between the top of the block and the head just below the glow plugs. The -34 manual I have is not one of the newer ones. I need an electronic copy or a link to the latest edition of the manual for the pages for the remval and installation of the heads, valve covers, intake manifold and exhaust manifolds. I was shopping for newer manuals this past weekend at the Sussex NJ show but there were none to be had.

The show was great, the weather changed for the better and the MTA guys really went all out providing an onsite fork lift and other ammedities for the vendors. This event is a real show and not just a fea market. The support from the local Guard unit and the Piccatinny Arsenal was awsome. The Arsenal showed up with a USMC 9 ton cargo truck pulling a 155 howitzer and the Guard unit showed up with 2 Hemmits and 2 Humvees. There was an abundence of reinactors and over 130 display vehicles.

Thanks,
Nick DeNardo

Thanks Brad , Emmado, and Nick D for the post. I find myself needing to replace my head gaskets as well . Along with the intake and exhaust gaskets.
I was also told that it is not recommended to re-use the 17 bolts per side that hold the heads on because they may have stretched . What is your opinion on that?

Thanks
George

I was told that too, but it is obvious that it says to clean the goop off of the threads and re-use them.

Thanks all for the responses. The link will not work on my computer(it does not show up on the screen as readable information , some kind of code) I bought new bolts. The interesting thing about all of this is, the torque values are based on dry bolts and
sockets. The bolts located under the rocker arm cover along the bottom row are soaked with oil. How will this condition effect torquing the bolts?

Probably not enough to matter, because they only tell you to clean the goop off the bolts with a wire brush and mention nothing about chasing the threads in the block so goop them all and tighten away.

I just had an engine rebuilt at a High Perfromance shop, I asked him same question, he said no, if that was the case rebuild Kit would have also included them.
Plus he said that was reserved for race engines......

Go to www.tpub.com. You can access any HMMWV pub, or you can purchase the .pdf version. I believe the monthly rate is $10. I have downloaded all the HMMWV stuff. I would recommend the 9-2815-237-34 and the 9-2815-237-34P. I used these to build mine. Good luck.

I called GEP and three 6.5 eng. rebuilders and they say replace head bolts...they are torque to yield.
All who I called said Victor Reinz gaskets are the ones to use...even GEP said they are good, but Gep said they use Felpro in production of the 6.5 NA, and turbo.

Thanks Greg! I did purchase new head bolts and I was also told to oil the threads and put a drop or 2 of oil under the heads of the bolts prior to installation to achieve true torque. Any idea where I can get a cylinder head lifting device? I was able to remove the heads with a sling but replacing them will tale some extra effort in the truck alone.
